THB Sports Boys Tennis Athlete of the Year: MG's Luke Gilman
Oct. 22 FAIRMOUNT The curtain has fallen on the best four-year boys tennis in Madison-Grant history, and the player who led the way has also closed the book on his own storied career.
That doesn't mean Luke Gilman's tennis career is over. That has yet to be determined.
In 2024, Gilman posted a 21-2 record, was undefeated against area foes for the second straight season and led the Argylls to their third straight Central Indiana Conference championship. His talent and performance have earned Gilman his third consecutive THB Sports Boys Tennis Athlete of the Year award, surpassing Frankton's Aaron Hartley and Lapel's Kaleb Barnett.
“It's a great achievement,” Gilman said. “When I started my sophomore year, I never thought I would have made it.”
Gilman was 6-0 against Madison County players this year and was 23-3 for his career. He was also a perfect 5-0 in conference play 17-3 for his career in leading the Argylls to the CIC crown. His career record of 73-20 places him second in school history in wins, just two behind former teammate Clayton Hull, a 2024 graduate.
He captured the “triple-crown” career, winning conference, Madison County and section titles during his four seasons and said his sophomore year, when he won the conference and section titles and came within a stone's throw of the county title, was the highlight of his career.
“We won our first section. We were really close with Delta regionally, and I won my match,” Gilman said. “That was probably my favorite game we played. That whole second year … then we went out and showed who Madison-Grant was.”
The No. 1 singles player for the Argylls all four years, he was the last singles player left for the team after last season, leaving MG in a strange situation this year.
Many wondered how good the team would be, but the Argylls would also be playing with the bullseye on their back.
With Gilman maintaining his high level of play and the emergence of Ben Pax at No. 2 singles, he was 20–3, the Argylls remained a force in local tennis. They won 16 games and led the conference standings at 6-0. Their season only came to an end against strong rival Mississinewa in the section semifinals.
That match ended 2-2 and came down to Gilman's battle in the third set. While his career was ended by his loss, Gilman enjoyed the battle and the spirited support of his teammates.
“It was fun, even though I lost. It was a fun match,” he said. “It was probably my most memorable match ever. It was great to see court number 1 surrounded by people cheering and shouting. I don't think you can think of a better way to lose a match.”
With basketball and baseball seasons approaching, Gilman is a returning top player as he has yet to decide his future for both. He has attracted interest from a number of tennis schools, but has also attracted attention with his work on the mound for the regional championship baseball team.
Whichever path he chooses, the future looks bright.
