SLU hosts Southland's first individual tennis championships

HAMMOND, La. The 2024 Southland Conference Individual Tennis Championships will be held Thursday through Sunday at the Southeastern Tennis Complex.

The tournament, also known as the Southland Fall Masters, will feature single-elimination singles and doubles tournaments involving all of the league's men's and women's tennis programs.

The individual champions will qualify for the 2024 ITA Conference Masters Championship from November 7 to 10. From this, four players qualify for the NCAA Singles Championship (semi-finalists). Meanwhile, three doubles teams qualify for the NCAA Doubles Championship through the Conference Masters (champion, finalist, third place).

Sophomore Leana Gomez will represent Southeastern in women's singles. The Miami product will face NJIT's Paula Menendez Alvarez in the first round on Thursday at 5 p.m.

The SLU duo plays in doubles Bente Bierma And Panatchakorn Suanarsa will open tournament play with a 2 p.m. match on Thursday against McNeese pairing Erica Hagi and Ana Hollweg. Bierma and Suanarsa recently won the “A” doubles draw at last weekend's Dillard Invitational.
