Young fast bowler Sam Elliott cleared the tail to extend a mammoth 16-match unbeaten streak for Victoria against New South Wales in the Sheffield Shield on Wednesday.

Elliott claimed career-best figures of 4-44, including the important wicket of NSW keeper Josh Philippe for 88, sealing a 141-run win at the MCG and taking the Vics to the top of the Shield table.

The result meant Victoria's streak against NSW would extend for an eighth year, with the Blues not having beaten their old rivals in a red ball match since February 2017.

Resuming at 6-185 in pursuit of 383, Philippe looked on course for a fourth first-class hundred before he flashed on a wide delivery from Elliott and took it behind him.

The wickets of Mitchell Starc, Nathan Lyon and Jackson Bird soon followed and all fell to Elliott, who vindicated his selection over Australian A-capped fast Mitch Perry with match figures of 4-62 from 23 overs.

Elsewhere, Western Australia secured a six-wicket win over Tasmania at the WACA despite an early wobble in the fourth innings.

Chasing a modest target of 83 runs for victory on day four, the hosts initially slumped to 4-18 in the sixth over as Tigers pacers Riley Meredith and Kieran Elliott wreaked havoc on the spring deck.

However, all-rounder Hilton Cartwright and wicketkeeper Josh Inglis, who recorded a century in the first innings, combined for an unbeaten 65-run partnership for the fifth wicket to guide Western Australia to victory.

After losing to South Australia by just three runs in a Sheffield Shield classic last year, Queensland had made a solid start to their chase of 359 at Allan Border Field.

But Matt Renshaw fell 21 seconds behind Nathan McAndrew to continue his first-class run drought, which ended an opening partnership of 61 runs.
