Women's tennis to compete in the SLC Fall Championships, Bearkat Invitation
HAMMOND, La. The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) women's tennis team will be spread out this weekend, competing in two fall tournaments.
JuniorYaiza Vazquezand sophomoresHitakamaya Narwhalare gearing up for the first-ever Southland Conference (SLC) fall championships Thursday through Sunday at the Southeastern Tennis Complex in Hammond, Louisiana.
The action kicks off with doubles matches on Thursday at 2 p.m. Vazquez and Narwal will face Nicholls' Aada Inna/Paulina Villegas. Vazquez will play her first round singles match against Salome Fluri of McNeese at 5 p.m.
A win on Thursday advances Vazquez/Narwal to the doubles quarterfinals, where they will play the No. 2 seed team of Lyric Bonilla/Sofia Salcedo of Incarnate Word on Friday at 11 a.m. If Vazquez wins her singles match, she will face No. 3-seeded singles player Honoka Umeda of Northwestern State on Friday at 4 p.m.
The women's doubles and singles semi-finals are scheduled for Saturday at 11am and 3pm respectively. All championship matches will be played on Sunday, with the doubles match scheduled for 10 a.m. and the singles match at 12:30 p.m.
Winners of the singles and doubles tournaments will qualify for the 2024 ITA Conference Masters Championship, scheduled for Nov. 7-10 in San Diego.
The rest of the UTRGV women's tennis team will compete in Huntsville Friday through Sunday at the Bearkat Invitation at the Chuck & Wanda Beckner Tennis Center.
