Olympic champion Qinwen Zheng applauds China's tennis boom after Paris 2024
Zheng became the first Chinese player to win Olympic gold in singles when she triumphed in Paris, sparking an unprecedented wave of interest in the sport at home.
Tournaments in Beijing, Shanghai and other Chinese cities have played out in front of sold-out crowds in recent months, with local players achieving unprecedented success.
Zheng will play at the Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo, where she started her campaign with a 7-5, 6-0 victory over Japan's Moyuka Uchijima on Thursday.
According to the top players, tennis is flourishing at all levels in China, and not just professionally.
“After I won at the Olympics, tennis started to become more popular in China,” said the world number seven.

Wang Xinyu and Zhang Zhizhen also came away from the Paris Olympics with medals, taking silver in the mixed doubles.
Zhang and Bu Yunchaokete competed in an all-Chinese semifinal at the Hangzhou Open last month.
The 22-year-old Bu then caused a sensation at the China Open in Beijing, where he defeated sixth seed Andrey Rublev in the quarter-finals before losing to world number one Jannik Sinner in the semi-finals.
Zheng said professional success has an impact on grassroots tennis in China.
“All parents think tennis is a very good sport, so they want their children to play tennis too,” she says.
Zheng arrived in Tokyo after losing to Aryna Sabalenka in the final of the Wuhan Open. On Friday she will face Canadian Leylah Fernandez in the quarter-finals.
“I tried to discover more things in my game, go to the net more and be more aggressive than before,” Zheng said after her victory over world No. 57 Uchijima.
“I think it's time to add new things to my game.”
