Walsh Jesuit vs. Padua OHSAA high school football scores, updates
CUYAHOGA FALLS Walsh Jesuit, the No. 1 team in the Beacon Journal rankings, left nothing to chance.
After posting a 44-41 win over Padua Franciscan last year, the Warriors looked to dominate the Bruins to finish a 10-0 regular season.
Mission accomplished.
Walsh (10-0) dominated all three phases of the match, defeating Padua (5-5) 42-0 on Friday at Conway Memorial Stadium. The Warriors earned their first undefeated regular season since 1998, when they also advanced to the Division III title game.
With the regular season behind us, Walsh coach Nick Alexander said, “December 5 is our goal.” That would be the date of this year's Division II state finals.
“I'm really proud of the way our seniors led us on senior night,” Alexander said. “This was a weird game because we had locked in the No. 1 position, but we're just going one week at a time. Being 10-0 for the first time since 1998 is great and these guys can celebrate that tonight. But we know that the real season starts tomorrow morning.”
Walsh quarterback Keller Moten scored three rushing touchdowns in the first quarter. Moten finished with 93 yards rushing and three touchdowns, along with 6-of-8 for 95 yards passing.
However, it was early in the second quarter when Moten's leadership emerged.
“When we were up 21-0 and they were about to make a field goal, I reminded them, 'Hey, last year we were up 17-0. They scored 28 unanswered. Keep your foot on the gas. '” Moten said.
Walsh did just that, as Dominic Romanini blocked Padua's Caleb Zolkowski's 27-yard FG attempt. Two plays later, Walsh was back in the end zone, thanks to a 33-yard TD run by Vinnie Courtad.
Moten wasn't the only Warrior with multiple rushing TDs. Lucas Weaver had a 4-yard score in the second quarter and closed the game with a 14-yard TD run in the fourth. He finished with 76 yards rushing.
“Keller is great. Marty Tobin and Carlos [Smith] are great,” Weaver said. 'It makes the job easier for me. Especially since Keller is a dual threat, it makes everything I do easier.”
Walsh's defense threw its third shutout of the season. The Warriors held Padua running back Roderick Love to just 54 yards rushing after averaging 159 yards per game.
