St. Ignatius football vs. Football North: Wildcats end their first regular season with one win since 1947
CLEVELAND, Ohio – St. Ignatius was defeated 27-26 by Mississauga Football North on Friday night at George Finnie Stadium in Berea.
Football North trailed by 14 at halftime, but scored the only touchdown of the third quarter and converted a two-point try to cut the lead to 26-20. The Chargers took their first lead since the start of the first quarter when linebacker Shane Keys-Wilson rushed for a 3-yard touchdown to cap off a 13-play, 82-yard drive with just over 4 minutes remaining.
St. Ignatius was able to advance to the 21-yard line, but after an 8-yard rushing loss and a big sack, the Wildcats faced fourth-and-31 with 1:09 to go and were unable to convert.
St. Ignatius finished with -18 yards rushing for the game. It led 26-12 at halftime despite having -1 rushing yards.
After trailing 6-0, St. Ignatius Tristian Hughes returned an interception for a touchdown.
Sophomore Dane Donovan threw first-half touchdowns to senior Cody Haddad and senior Gavin Vollmer. Luke Sims scored on a three-yard run in the final minute of the half. St. Ignatius Braeden Drummond intercepted a pass in the end zone as time expired in the first half.
In the first half, both teams struggled with extra points, as Voetbal Noord (5-4) missed two and blocked two from St. Ignatius. Football North's biggest highlight in the first half was an 84-yard touchdown pass.
With the loss, the Wildcats finished with their first one-win regular season since 1947. St. Ignatius entered the game in the 16th and final playoff spot in Region 1, but had no control over their own destiny.
