The Middlebury football team was given a 21-20 lead by Bates in the 67th meeting between the teams.
HIGHLIGHTS
- The Bobcats struck first and marched down the field on their second possession. Colton Bosselait found Maverick Selementi for a nine-yard score, and Marcos Ruiz split the uprights for the early 7-0 lead on a drive that spanned 6:48 of action.
- Just nine seconds into the second quarter, the Panthers cut the deficit to 7-3 Zach Levy scored a 30-yard field goal.
- With 3:33 left in the half, Teddy Daniel intercepted a Bosselait pass and returned the ball 60 yards to the Bates 20-yard line. With a personal foul on the line, the visitors took over inside the red zone. Cody Weitzman would hit it two plays later on a nine-yard rushing touchdown, and Levy's kick was good to put Middlebury up 10–7.
- As the clock expired at the end of the second stanza, Bates regained his advantage. Bosselait connected with Sergio Beltran for a 27-yard touchdown reception, and Ruiz followed with the extra point to give the Bobcats a 14-10 lead with 33 seconds left.
- The Panthers looked to close the gap with just seconds left, but Levy's attempt from 48 yards out sailed just wide left, allowing Bates to maintain the four-point lead at the break.
- On the first drive of the second half, Middlebury made its way down the gridiron to the five-yard line. Bates' defense held firm and forced the Panthers to kick a field goal that pinged off the right post and out of bounds.
- With 6:42 left in the third quarter, Middlebury marched into the red zone again. The Bobcats denied the Panthers from the end zone twice before Connor McClellan broke the plane for a touchdown and Levy converted the extra point for the 17-14 lead.
- Early in the final frame, Bates tackled Middlebury again, forcing the team to make a field goal. Levy made no mistake and turned the ball through the middle of the uprights to extend the Panthers' advantage to 20-14.
- Bates countered again, as Bosselait connected with Ryan Gleason for a 39-yard catch to set up a scoring drive. After a pair of short rushes from Ryan Lynskey, Bosselait found Beltran in the end zone for a 14-yard touchdown. Ruiz scored the extra point to put Bates ahead 21-20.
- With 1:18 left in the game, Middlebury had one last chance to win the game, but the field goal attempt was short and the Bobcats were able to run out the clock to secure the 21-20 victory.
NOTES
- With two field goals today, Levy becomes the program record holder with 21 in his career. The previous mark of 20 was set by NFL Super Bowl champion Stephen Hauschka '07, who will be inducted into the Hall of Fame next weekend.
- Matt Shaw (12) and Charlie Ozolin (10) both posted career-high tackles during the game.
The Panthers host Hamilton for Senior Day on Saturday, November 2 at 12:30 p.m. Hauschka, Ryan Armstrong '06 and the rest of the Hall of Fame Class of 2024 will be celebrated at halftime, as well as that evening during the official ceremony on campus .
