Manika Batra crashes during WTT Champions in quarter-finals
Manika Batra's historic run at the WTT Champions in Montpellier, France, came to an end on Saturday evening when she lost 0-3 (8-11, 8-11, 10-12) to China's Qian Tianyi in the quarterfinals.
On Friday, world number 30 Manika created history by becoming the first Indian rower to reach the quarter-finals of a WTT Champions event when she defeated world number 14 Bernadette Szocs 3-1 (11-9, 6 -11, 13-11, 11-9).
However, in the quarter-finals, Manika was no match for world No. 21 Qian Tianyi, a player who had upset compatriot and world No. 3 Wang Yidi in the pre-quarter-finals.
Unlike her pre-quarterfinal against Szocs, Manika looked less impressive against Tianyi. Her defense was shaky and she could hardly get his blocks to great effect as the Chinese paddler racked up points with big strokes.
Manika's departure ended India's campaign at the WTT Champions in Montpellier.
Manika had started her campaign at WTT champions Montpellier with a comprehensive 3-0 (11-4, 11-8, 12-10) victory over American Lily Zhang and followed it up with a 29-minute victory over the eighth seed Szocs, an opponent she previously defeated at the Paris Olympics during India's 3-2 win over Romania in the pre-quarterfinal.
Meanwhile, India's top-ranked rower Sreeja Akula, the world number 25, suffered a first-round exit after losing 3-2 (6-11, 11-7, 11-1, 8-11, 11-8) against 13 Adriana Diaz from Puerto Rico.
There were no Indian paddlers in contention in the men's singles competition at the event.
