Men's tennis sends two pairs to the doubles finals at the CCB Collegiate Invitational
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. On the second day of the CCB Collegiate Invitational at the Country Club of Birmingham, Alabama, the Belmont University men's tennis team went a perfect 4-0 in doubles, sending two tandems into the finals Sunday morning. The Bruins also had a pair of junior singles victories Sabi Roi and freshmen Charlie Robin collect triumphs.
“The doubles match was great overall,” the head coach said Jeff zero. “I thought we played big points really well and the energy was great. Hopefully we can continue this tomorrow and appear in both finals.”
The duo of junior Esunge Ndumbe and Robin defeated Harold von Raemdock and Juan Accossatto of South Alabama 6-3 in their opening round match before edging past Sam Baldwin and Anthony Weingarten of Kennesaw State 7-5 in the semifinals of the red draw.
At the Bulldog, Roi signs and graduates Nicholas of Hellenes defeated Ben Kiblinger and Martin Schwartzman of tournament host Samford 7-5 before defeating Tulane's Asaf Friedler and Charlie Burdell 6-4.
“Sabi and Charlie both fought through difficult circumstances and showed good resilience in more difficult matches,” said coach Cero. “Tomorrow will be no different playing the fourth singles match in three days. I believe the boys will be up to the challenge and can finish our weekend strong.”
Both Roi and Robin won the 10-point super tiebreakers of the third set. After dropping the first set 6-2 to North Alabama's Izan Orgiles in the consolation round of the red tie, Roi took the second set 6-4. He then won in the decisive tiebreak 11-9.
Robin Victor Frumholz from South Alabama also survived in the consolation round of the red draw. Robin won the tiebreak 10-6 after securing the first set 6-3, but faltered in the second 6-1.
Ndumbe and Robin will face North Alabama's Nazar Fedoryshyn and Alberto Altur in the red doubles final on Sunday morning at 9 a.m.
In Sunday morning's Bulldog doubles final, Roi and von Hellens will take on the Lions' Samuel Balfour and Lachlan Brian.
Sunday's action also includes another round of singles following the doubles final.
