Manika Batra's historic WTT Champions run ends in the quarter-finals
Manika Batra's historic journey at the WTT Champions in Montpellier, France, ended on Saturday evening after a quarter-final loss to China's Qian Tianyi. Batra, ranked No. 30 in the world, fell in consecutive matches (8-11, 8-11, 10-12) to Qian, ranked No. 21 in the world, ending her memorable campaign. Despite the defeat, Batra set a new benchmark for Indian table tennis, becoming the first Indian rower to reach the quarter-finals of a WTT Champions event, a prestigious series featuring the top 32 male and female players worldwide, with significant prize money and valuable ranking points.
Her impressive run started with a convincing 3-0 (11-4, 11-8, 12-10) victory over American Lily Zhang. Batra then stunned eighth seed Bernadette Szocs, the world number 14, in a thrilling 3-1 match (11-9, 6-11, 13-11, 11-9). This win not only secured Batra's spot in the quarter-finals but also added to her list of wins against Szocs, whom she had previously defeated during India's 3-2 win over Romania in the pre-quarter-final at the Paris Olympics.

However, Batra struggled to replicate her previous form against Qian, who had already caused a significant upset by beating compatriot and world number 3 Wang Yidi in the pre-quarter-finals. In contrast to her composed performance against Szocs, Batra seemed unsettled against the aggressive Qian. Her usually reliable defense faltered and her blocking shots lacked the usual crispness, making it difficult to counter Qian's powerful blows. Qian took advantage of these weaknesses to win the match in just three matches and mark the end of India's presence in the tournament.
India's top-ranked rower, world number 25 Sreeja Akula, also suffered a setback in Montpellier and exited the competition in the first round. She lost a hard-fought 3-2 match (6-11, 11-7, 11-1, 8-11, 11-8) to No. 13 seed Adriana Diaz of Puerto Rico after a competitive showdown. With no Indian men participating in the singles events, the country's campaign at the WTT Champions came to an early end.
