It was a sigh of relief for Jack Draper on Sunday after he withstood a late attack from Karen Khachanov to clinch the Erste Bank Open title.

The Brit held on in a 6-4, 7-5 win to secure his second ATP Tour title. Trailing 0-4 in the second set, Khachanov rattled off five consecutive games to shift the momentum firmly in his favor. However, Draper called it back to win the biggest title of his career.

“I was playing so well, and then the momentum shifted,” said Draper, who improved to 37-21 on the season. “To be honest, I didn't feel too nervous or tense, I just missed a few balls and made some wrong decisions, and Karen improved his level. That's a testament to how good he is, he's a fighter and he's in good shape.

“It got very tight there, but I stayed solid and mentally in good shape. Luckily I was able to get through, it was a relief. It feels incredible to win my first ATP 500. I am incredibly happy and so proud of myself and my team. It's for moments like this, so I'm going to enjoy it.”

With his one hour and 35 minute triumph, Draper became the first player to win the tournament on his debut since compatriot Andy Murray did so in 2014. A great season will see the 22-year-old ascend to a new career high. from number 15 in the PIF ATP rankings on Monday.

Prior to Sunday's championship match, Khachanov had a perfect 4-0 record in indoor tour-level finals. The 28-year-old also had an eight-match winning streak after taking his seventh ATP Tour title in Almaty last week, but could not force a deciding set.

“I would like to congratulate Jack and his team on this victory, you deserve it,” said Khachanov. 'You've been going for it all week. You are on the rise this season and I wish you the best of luck in the future. I look forward to sharing the court again and getting revenge for this loss.

“Once you get to the final, you think about winning it. But I can't complain, the last two weeks have been great. Now that I won last week and played the final here in Vienna for the first time, I would like to thank my team.

“I was about to come back, and that just shows that you have to stay there, be positive and fight hard. [We have] a great example of this is Thomas [Muster].”

After leveling the Lexus ATP Head2Head series at 2-2, Draper became only the fourth British man to win an ATP 500 title.

Draper was imperious during the first set, winning 95 percent (18/19) of the points after his first throw, according to Infosys ATP Stats. In a winding second set, Khachanov unleashed some of his most sparkling tennis, but it was Draper who held his nerve to cross the line.
