Michigan football rejoices in 'great feeling' of Michigan State victory
No one is confusing this Michigan football team with last year's Wolverines.
A season ago, the Wolverines barely broke a sweat as they waltzed into East Lansing and walked their state rival with their dog, taking their foot off the gas for the entire second half and still putting up nearly 49 points on the Spartans, in a shutout to boot.
No, Saturday night in Ann Arbor was nothing like that.
The Wolverines fell behind early by a touchdown and head coach Sherrone Moore had to challenge them (saying he couldn't repeat the postgame) on the sideline after a first quarter in which they were outscored 135-15.
UM FIGURES:Wolverines didn't have to be pretty to enjoy a win
But then, facing the prospect of a winless October, things clicked for the Wolverines. There was Davis Warren, the former walk-on quarterback who won the job out of camp and was then benched in Week 3, only to come back and take the job again after Jack Tuttle went down with an injury this week went down.
The senior put together the best play of all three UM signal-callers this season. He completed 13 of 19 passes for 123 yards, one touchdown and, most importantly, no turnovers, UM's first flawless game of the year.
There was Alex Orji, who had the best game of his career, running six times for 64 yards (more than half of the Wolverines' total on the ground) and a touchdown. There was Donovan Edwards, who continued his perfect passing streak when he hauled in a 23-yard touchdown pass to go up two scores in the fourth quarter.
All added up, combined with MSU losing the penalty shootout 6-0, missing a 25-yard field goal and catching a ball on its own 5-yard line on a kickoff, and Michigan retaining the Paul Bunyan Trophy for the third straight season. , with a 24-17 victory.
And there was tight end Colston Loveland on the receiving end of that throw, as well as Warren's first go-ahead goal near the end of the first half. In the final stages, combined with MSU losing the penalty shootout 6–0, missing a 25-yard field goal and catching a ball on its own 5-yard line on a kickoff, Michigan retained the Paul Bunyan Trophy for the third consecutive season. , with a 24-17 victory.
But that didn't come without some scares, as it took a force throw from Aidan Chiles to fall incomplete on the goal line in the final two minutes for Warren to finally take a winning knee and let out a shout.
SHWN WINDSOR:Michigan Football and Sherrone Moore save the season against hated MSU
“It's a great feeling,” Edwards said. “Mainly an intrastate rivalry. It's a great feeling to keep Paul home.”
While it wasn't a ranked win, it was necessary in the worst way. One loss and the Wolverines were staring at the prospect of no bowl game. While that's still technically a possibility, UM now only needs one more win, while Northwestern is still scheduled to return to the postseason.
It won't be a game they wanted to play in the Cheez-It Bowl, Pinstripe Bowl or maybe Duke's Mayo Bowl are possibilities, but it will probably be something. That was because UM played the cleanest game of the season.
“If you lose overall, you don't have fun,” Moore said after the game. “That was a big piece for me. I wanted the boys to enjoy the moment, to embrace it because they deserve it.
“So for me, they're having fun and they're laughing like that… I mean, that's the best. That's what drives me at the end of the day.”
RAINER SABIN:Michigan football is finally finding the perfect QB mix of Davis Warren and Alex Orji
Warren wow? Not quite yet, but it's a start
The “what if” game may not be the game the Wolverines want to play.
What if Michigan never left Warren after he threw three interceptions against Arkansas State? After all, his other 11 passes were all completed that day. With Saturday as proof, it appears that turnovers can be coached out of one's game, while learning to throw effectively (as Orji was asked to do) cannot.
Instead, UM went with Orji and then Tuttle, which was derailed midseason. But after Saturday the attack slowly started again.
“Never look back and have no regrets,” Moore said. “Now coming back to this decision, I feel good about (Warren) … but credit to him: he was replaced and he stayed there. The preparation was the same, he was always the same teammate, always the same person. Only credit to him, his value and how great a teammate he is.”
Warren's game started slowly, with four completions in five attempts over the first 27 minutes. And then he completed a key third-and-5 for Semaj Morgan for six yards in the final two minutes of the half, setting the chains in motion.
His next throw was a 15-yarder from the right hash to the left boundary to Peyton O'Leary, followed by a flyout to Loveland to pick up 9. Later in the drive, in the final minute, MSU bit hard on a play-action and Warren found Loveland wide open in the back of the end zone.
'LITTLE BRO…LITTLE BRO DOING THINGS'Michigan football TE Colston Loveland sounds good at MSU
“Absolutely,” Loveland said when asked if he was surprised he was so wide open.
Although Warren completed only three passes in the second half, they all proved crucial.
The first was a 9-yard pass to Morgan on third-and-8. The next was a 23-yard flea flicker to Tyler Morris to get into the red zone. Then, finally, a dart to Kendrick Bell, which put up 12 on third-and-3, one play before Edwards completed the drive with a TD pass to Loveland.
“You better stop counting him out, man, because he has shown time and time again that he can overcome adversity in his personal life and in the world of football,” Edwards said of Warren. “He will always overcome adversity.”
I have to bring the 'same juice'
The Wolverines were all smiles in the postgame and ready to look ahead.
UM welcomes No. 1 Oregon, undefeated this season, to Ann Arbor on Saturday (3:30 p.m., CBS). Oregon has scored at least 30 points in each of its past seven games, including a 32-31 win over Ohio State at home and a 38-9 win over Illinois, which narrowly edged Michigan by two touchdowns on Saturday.
While the math for scoring transitive properties may be concerning for the Wolverines, there is renewed energy back in Ann Arbor.
“I mean, we just got to keep the juice that we had today,” said defensive tackle Kenneth Grant, who had three tackles (one for loss) and a fumble recovery. “The juice on the sideline was good, the juice before the game was good, the juice after the game was good. I had to come in on Monday with the same juice, ready to prepare for Oregon.”
If UM wants to have any chance in that game, they will have to avoid losing the ball again. (It would also be wise to commit zero penalties again.) There's more to a team than just getting a mediocre passing offense back.
JEFF SEIDEL:Michigan football is once again taking a bite out of Michigan State out of nowhere this time
The defense did a good job of bending without breaking, allowing just two scores on MSU's four trips inside the red zone. And while special teams had one bad kick and one failed extra point, Tommy Doman was able to put MSU in the 20 three times.
It wasn't perfect, but in a season where losses piled up, there was one goal on Saturday: Find a way, no matter what, to win.
Michigan did that and that's a start. November may not be so much fun. But for now, the Wolverines deserved a night to laugh.
“It means a lot to the program to keep Paul here and stay for another 365 years,” Moore said with a grin. “Huge for our kids to get a win, get that confidence back.”
