Danville files a complaint with the IHSAA for late reporting of football sectional loss
Danville High School has filed a formal complaint with the school Indiana High School Athletic Association about the handling of the final football match between Danville and Brebeuf Jesuit on Friday evening.
Danville coach Jayme Comer said he and athletic director Aimee Harvey submitted a letter to the IHSAA on Monday listing the school's grievances about the end of the game. IHSAA Commissioner Paul Neidig confirmed Tuesday that the IHSAA received the email.
They submitted some information and asked us to review it, Neidig said.

Comer's frustration in the aftermath of Brebeuf's 50-49 victory in a Class 4A Sectional 22 first-round game stems from the two minutes at the end of regulation when Danville thought it had won the game and faced Roncalli next Friday. would play in the league. section semi-final.
“We feel like we have to play,” Comer said. As I said to our children after the game: You get a life lesson from it. But right now, I'm still struggling to figure out what that lesson is.
In quick review, Danville rallied from a 21-point deficit to take a 43-35 lead on Cameron McMahon's 55-yard interception return with 14.8 seconds left. But on the final regular play, Brebeuf scored on a miraculous play on a pass from Maverick Geske, three back laterals, and Geske raced the final 42 of the 60-yard play for a touchdown. After the 2-point conversion, the score was tied 43-43 in overtime.
Danville scored first in overtime on a point by Minh Vu to take a 49–43 lead (the 2-point conversion failed). After Brebeuf's possession, Geske appeared to be tackled on 4th and 6th. The ball spewed loose and was covered. Several Danville players ran onto the field. A penalty flag was not immediately thrown, but after the officials had discussed the play for two minutes, a penalty was called. After the flag, Brebeuf scored on a 3-yard TD run by CJ Harris and won the game on Alex Todd's subsequent extra point.
Part of our complaint is that there was no flag on the field, Comer said. We pass the handshake line. At what point is the game over? The officials did not leave the field. We feel like they were persuaded to stay on the field and make the call that they did. That's the part we were most frustrated about. Everyone I've talked to has said, “There's no way you're ever calling.”
Comer said he's not saying the officials are entirely to blame. An injury to the crew chief of the officials assigned to the game led to a more inexperienced crew working Friday's game, which was one of the largest in the state between two teams ranked in the top 10 of 4A.
We rank these officers every Saturday morning, Comer said. That wasn't the team that got ratings from the coaches all year long. It was brought together for the first time in one big game.
Comer said he received a call from IHSAA assistant commissioner Robert Faulkens on Saturday, expressing empathy for Danville's situation. And he said Neidig responded to Danville's complaint via email, saying the IHSAA would review the information.
Brebeuf Jesuit athletics director Ted Hampton declined comment.
There has to be some kind of solution, Comer said. My children and my parents don't know how to proceed. We had a match that we won. The bad part is that it was a great high school football game. There were great plays on both sides of the ball by Danville and Brebeuf. It should have simply been up to the players on the field to make the decision, and not leave the game two minutes after the game was over. Our community feels robbed of a victory.
Meanwhile, Brebeuf Jesuit prepares for another home match when Roncalli visits in the section semi-final on Friday. Roncalli may receive support from a certain Hendricks County community for that heavyweight bout. Comer said he heard Danville fans are having Danville Won t-shirts made and plan to attend the game.
