NCAA puts USC football on one-year probation, fines Trojans $50,000 for coaching violations
The LOS ANGELES USC football program has been placed on one-year probation after the NCAA and the school reached an agreement that eight of the program's analysts improperly participated in on- and off-field coaching activities in the spring and fall of 2022 and the spring. from 2023.
The university must pay a $50,000 fine. Trojans coach Lincoln Riley will not be suspended. The NCAA said in a negotiating resolution released on Tuesday that Riley was not personally involved in violations nor was he aware of the violations at the time the violations occurred.
USC's probation runs from November 12, 2024 through November 11, 2025. The violations were resolved as Level II violations. Level I violations are considered the most serious. The penalties were agreed to by the school and the NCAA.
In the negotiated resolution, the NCAA said USC has added a full-time athletics compliance officer dedicated to monitoring football activities.
Analysts have been covering college football for a while now. They are not allowed to teach on the field during training, but often do so because it is difficult to control. It's rare for them to be punished because it happens so often.
The NCAA lifted restrictions this year on the number of coaches who could be on a staff, so several analysts have been promoted to full-time members of the coaching staff. USC promoted three analysts to its full-time coaching staff this summer after the rules changed.
The NCAA described the investigation as a collaboration with USC. In 2010, the university received the harshest punishment in recent NCAA history, when it was hit with a two-year postseason ban, four years of probation and the loss of 30 football scholarships.
The NCAA alleged that Heisman Trophy winner Reggie Bush received impermissible benefits. Basketball star OJ Mayo was also a central target in that case.
USC was punished for a lack of institutional control. That fine has guided the university's thought process for years as it has taken a relatively conservative, risk-averse approach on several issues, primarily spending on name, image and likeness compared to other programs, which has frustrated some of its fan base.
