Womens Tennis brings 17 wins to Chattanooga Invitation
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (November 12, 2024) The University of North Alabama women's tennis team posted 17 wins in the 2024 fall season finale at the Chattanooga Invitational.
The Lions made their second straight trip to Tennessee and ended the pre-championship campaign with another double-digit win. UNA faced each other in four doubles matches and two singles duals, posting 17 wins from 22 matches against Jacksonville State, host Chattanooga and Atlantic Sun Conference foe Bellarmine. North Alabama won all of their matches in Bellarmine doubles and Chattanooga singles, while earning majority or tie results in the rest of the matches.
The Lions faced Jacksonville State for the first time and opened with two wins in the opening doubles matches. Senior Anoek Pruijmboom and junior Eeva Ristola got the first victory in a 7-5 win over Polina Ramenskaya and Irene Artigas, with sophomores Emma Ansorge And Ada Karabacak they won 6-2 against Aneka Patel and Lea Erenda.
North Alabama won four of six singles matches against the Gamecocks, starting in junior Stanislav Bobrovnikov Beat Artigas, 6-3, 6-3. Karabacak picked up a second JSU win, beating Anna Syrova 7-6(3), 6-4, and Ristola also picked up a second win with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Ramenskaya. Sophomore Mathilde Delaney took the final victory in a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Patel.
North Alabama next took on Chattanooga and dominated the match, sweeping the singles and splitting the two doubles matches. Bobrovnikova won her second singles match of the weekend against the Mocs, starting with a 7-5, 3-6, 1-0 thriller against Rozalie Dohnalova. Karabacak defeated Savannah Presson 6-4, 6-3, and Ansorge earned her first weekend singles victory against Emma Pedretti 6-1, 6-1. Delaney closed the singles match with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Margeret Manolache.
The Lions and Mocs each won a doubles match, with Karabacak and Ristola the lone winners in a 6-1 win over Presson and Pedretti. Bobrovnikova and Pruijmboom kept it close against UTC's Alice Hall and Dohnalova, but fell narrowly in a 7-5 performance.
The rest of UNA's weekend consisted of doubles, but the Lions continued to win against the Knights and Gamecocks.
The team of Bobrovnikova and Pruijmboom opened with a 6-3 win over Bellarmine's Ekaterina Tikhonko and Yeva Kramarova, and Delaney and Karabacak also picked up a 6-2 victory over the Knights' Marika Caruk and Shu Grosso. Ansorge and Ristola won the final Bellarmine doubles match with a 6-2 victory against Reese Parker and Lillie Parker.
Round two of doubles against Jacksonville State resulted in one more win than the two from the first match. Another victory for Bobrovnikova/Pruijmboom resulted in the first match, with the two winning 6-1 against Ramenskaya and Artigas. Karabacak defeated Patel and Erenda for the second time, this time with partner Delaney in a 6–0 win.
The final win against the Gamecocks came from junior Lena Karlovcan and freshmen Peyton Parrishleaving Tennessee with a 6-4 win over Syrova and Thomason.
North Alabama Women's Tennis ends the 2024 fall season with 70 wins, but the team has its sights set on the 2025 season with high expectations. Olaya Garrido-Rivas, director of UNA Tennis, will now make her first appearance at the ASUN tournament under her leadership this spring as she builds on a 2024 season that ended with a Division I program-record 15 wins.
