Bears Claim 4 NCAA Tennis Qualifiers

Katja Wiersholm will compete in the NCAA Singles Championship for the second time when the Bears meet in Waco next week.
The California women's tennis team will send three Golden Bears to the NCAA Singles Championship and one duo to the NCAA Doubles Championship next week, with the Bears matching their tally of individual postseason qualifiers from last season.
The NCAA released the fields Monday for the 64-player singles tournament and the 32-team doubles championship, and Cal is tied with several teams for the most singles qualifiers. The Bears' total of four qualifiers is just behind leaders North Carolina, UCLA and Virginia, who each have five.
Baylor will host the NCAA individual championships from November 19-24 at the Hurd Tennis Center in Waco, Texas. Normally, the NCAA individual championships are held in the spring and traditionally begin after the conclusion and at the same location of the NCAA team championship in May. The individual championships will be held this season and next season in the fall as part of a pilot program, with Baylor also hosting this year's team championship from May 15-18.
Cal sophomore Mao Mushika will participate in both singles and doubles. A native of Ichinomiya, Japan, Mushika and senior Jessica Alsolahailing from Fresno, were the first Bears to qualify for the postseason when they won their doubles quarterfinal match at the ITA All-American Championships on September 27 in Cary, North Carolina. In their first tournament as doubles partners, Alsola and Mushika defeated Vanderbilt's 29th seed Celia-Belle Mohr and Sophia Webster 6-2, 6-2. The Bears bring a 3-1 record to Waco.
Mushika recently qualified for the NCAA singles championship when she defeated Pepperdine's Vivian Yang 6-1, 6-3 in the quarterfinals of the ITA West Sectional Championships last Friday in Los Angeles. Mushika is ranked 107th and is 7-3 in singles. Although this is Mushika's first NCAA singles tournament, she played in NCAA doubles for the first time last May with former teammate Hannah Villers Moellerwith the Bears falling in the round of 32.
Earlier last Friday, Wiersholm punched her ticket to Baylor, defeating UC San Diego's Julia Hayne 6-0, 6-2 in the quarterfinals of the ITA Conference Masters Championship in Rome, Georgia. This is the second NCAA singles appearance for 33rd-seeded Wiersholm (3-1), who fell in the round of 64 last May. The Kirkland, Washington product also previously competed in NCAA doubles, when she and Alsola fell in the round of 32 of the 2023 tournament.
Mi, a senior who transferred from Cornell to Cal last season, earned her first NCAA individual championship berth when she defeated Pepperdine's Yang 6-2, 6-4 in a playoff match last Saturday at ITA West Sectionals. Mi, who calls Berkeley Heights, New Jersey, home, has a 6-3 record in singles. The 80th-ranked Bear posted a team-best 40-5 record last season.
