Legendary Pa. hockey coach, National Hall of Famer, dies at 75
Bob Derr, the hockey coaching legend at Warwick High School, died Monday at the age of 75.
Derr coached Warwick for 39 seasons, winning 630 games and three PIAA titles, as well as six District 3 titles. He retired from coaching in 2022.
He was inducted into the National Field Hockey Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2010. In 2000 and 2001, he was named National Field Hockey Coaches Association Coach of the Year.
Derr held coaching roles at Warwick for 49 years. After coaching hockey for 43 years, he coached junior high wrestling for eight seasons and was the Warriors' track and field coach for 29 years.
Derr was also a highly respected wrestling official. He was inducted into the Pennsylvania Wrestling Coaches Association Hall of Fame as an official. He is also a member of the Lancaster-Lebanon and District 3 Wrestling Coaches Halls of Fame and the National Wrestling Hall of Fame.
According to the Lancaster County Sports Hall of Fame, Derr had worked five PIAA Championship tournaments in 2018 and appeared in 13 NCAA Division One tournaments, including six finals.
Derr was recognized prior to Tuesday night's PIAA Class 2A field hockey semifinal between Warwick and Palmyra.
We are so sorry to hear of the passing of longtime Hall of Fame Warwick hockey coach and esteemed wrestling official Bob Derr. One of the few coaches who can truly be called legendary. He was admired and emulated by many in the hockey community. He was equally respected for his work within the wrestling community, wrote former sportswriter Pete Kauffman, who covered Derrs teams.
Derr's impact on hockey is generational, with many former players now serving as coaches and even officials at all scholastic, collegiate and club levels.
Derr was a physical education and health teacher at Warwick Middle School before his retirement in 2007.
