Singapore Smash will start with CNY in 2025, the event will continue for another 5 years
SINGAPORE The Year of the Snake kicks off with a smash for Singapore's table tennis players, who will be in action from the second day of Chinese New Year during the Singapore Smash from January 30 to February 9.
On November 12, World Table Tennis (WTT) unveiled its 2025 calendar, which for the first time includes four Grand Smashes, the sporting equivalent of the Majors. The WTT Champions Series has also been expanded from five to six events for the season.
Singapore will host the first Grand Smash in 2025, with the series traveling to the United States from July 3 to 13, a new venue from August 14 to 24, before culminating in the China Smash from September 25 to October 5. The Saudi Smash, which was held for the first time in 2024, is not on the calendar.
In another boost for the Republic, The Straits Times understands that national sports agency Sport Singapore is working with WTT, the commercial arm of the International Table Tennis Federation, on a five-year extension for the event, which made its debut here in 2022.
With the tournament kicking off amid the festivities, the qualifiers will run from January 30 to February 1, with the main tournament starting on February 2. Singapore's world number 83 Izaac Quek is looking forward to playing in front of a big crowd at the OCBC Arena.
The 18-year-old, who is likely to play in the main draw, said: It doesn't have much impact for me. Even though it is the CNY period, it is the same for me. I still have a few days to celebrate before my tournament starts, but I still need to focus on preparing for the tournament.
The Singapore Smash is the one tournament that I look forward to and enjoy the most all year round because I would be playing in one of the top level international tournaments in front of my home crowd and I really enjoy the feeling.
Teammate Koen Pang, 22, who is ranked 123rd in the world, added: This is a big stage for us to get the chance to play against the big players, and I was able to learn a lot of good lessons from the people who I played against in 22nd place. Singapore smash.
Noting that the players are very used to competition during the CNY period, the Singapore Table Tennis Association (STTA) said they will be given time off from training to have a reunion dinner with their families.
Hong baos, in the form of prize money and ranking points, await players at the US$1.5 million (S$2 million) event.
In 2023, Quek stunned Indian Commonwealth Games champion Sharath Kamal Achanta (No. 52) and 2019 Swedish World Championships silver medalist Mattias Falck (No. 32) before losing to China's world No. 3 Wang Chuqin. He earned $15,000 and 175 ranking points, breaking into the world's top 100.
Similarly, Pang also reached the top 100 after reaching the round of 32, bagging $10,000 and 90 points.
A year later, the duo reached the quarterfinals of the men's doubles, claiming $3,500 and 350 points. They have since climbed to number 10 in the world rankings.
