East Bengal Eye third consecutive win, take on middle-order Odisha FC in ISL
Riding a high after a three-match unbeaten run, hosts East Bengal will hope to continue their momentum when they play Odisha FC in the Indian Super League here on Thursday. East Bengal have registered back-to-back wins but the Juggernauts will pose a tough challenge after beating the Kolkata side 2-1 earlier this season. The Juggernauts are fifth in the points table with 16 points from 11 matches. East Bengal FC have been on the rise lately and have secured seven points from nine matches.
After a tough start with seven defeats in the first eight matches, the Red & Gold Brigade, led by coach Oscar Bruzon, appear to have turned the tide and a win on Thursday would mark East Bengal FC's first three-match winning streak in the ISL . .
Defensive solidity was key to their turnaround, with two consecutive clean sheets on home turf. The last time they achieved a longer streak was in December 2023, which included a goalless draw against Odisha FC.
Odisha, on the other hand, boasts the league's most efficient attack, finding the back of the net every 43 minutes this season. Their 23 goals so far are the most they have achieved after eleven games in any season.
Diego Mauricio and Mourtada Fall top the charts after scoring seven and four goals respectively.
After conceding straight away in six matches, Odisha's backline held firm in their last away match, securing a stunning 6-0 win against Hyderabad FC.
In their nine matches so far, Odisha FC have emerged victorious on seven occasions, while East Bengal FC have won just once.
East Bengal head coach Oscar Bruzon acknowledged his team's admirable form but insisted they still have a long way to go to achieve their pre-season ambitions.
“The players are positive. We are not giving away too many chances. We are a team that is achieving good results. But we are still far from where we want to be in the rankings,” said Bruzon.
Odisha FC head coach Sergio Lobera also appreciated East Bengal FC for making some significant improvements in the last few matches.
“East Bengal FC is a very competitive team. They are working well and improving not only in terms of football but also in terms of mental motivation. It will be a very difficult match,” Lobera said. PTI ATK AH AH
