LTA bans transgender women from some domestic women's tennis and padel tournaments
Changes to Lawn Tennis Association rules will mean transgender women will no longer be allowed to compete in some domestic women's tennis and padel tournaments in Britain.
The LTA is updating its transgender and non-binary participation policy, but this will not affect participation in Wimbledon or ITF, WTA or ATP tournaments hosted in Great Britain.
The policy applies to UK domestic inter-club competitions only. The rules for tour events are still determined by the relevant governing body.
From January 25, transgender women, who were registered as male at birth, will be ineligible to compete in female events in higher level competitions, which usually involve individuals taking on players from another club or province.
The rules do not apply to events that take place between players from only one location, such as a club championship or a weekend social tournament. Venues can still set their own policies under these circumstances.
In updating the policy, the LTA says it has had to balance “two potentially conflicting responsibilities: the need to ensure that “competition in our sport is fair and a responsibility to ensure that tennis is welcoming and is inclusive.”
It also says it appreciates the “diversity of views on this issue” and will keep the policy under review in the coming years.
The current WTA policy on gender participation, based on the 2015 guidelines, is currently under review in light of the International Olympic Committee's Transgender Eligibility Framework published in 2021.
Currently, the WTA allows transgender women to compete if they have declared their gender as female for at least four years, have lowered testosterone levels and agreed to testing procedures.
The LPGA Golf Tour recently decided that transgender women who have gone through male puberty will no longer be allowed to compete on leading golf tours. That followed the decision by the England and Wales Cricket Board last month to say that any player who has gone through male puberty will no longer be eligible for the top two tiers of women's football from 2025.
Other sports governing bodies have also changed their policies in recent years, including athletics, cycling and swimming, to ban transgender athletes from competing in elite women's competitions.
