Tennis fans rage as Wimbledon finalist announces he is now Saudi PIF ambassador | Tennis | Sport
Fans have criticized Matteo Berrettini after he announced his latest partnership on social media.
The 2021 Wimbledon finalist has become an ambassador of the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund.
The PIF – the Saudi sovereign wealth fund controlled by Mohammed bin Salman – also has deals with both the ATP and WTA Tours, with their logo appearing on the sideboards at tournaments such as the Madrid Open.
Berrettini and the PIF shared the news of their collaboration on Instagram on Tuesday. The PIF said the world number 34 embodies PIF's vision to take tennis to the next level through inclusivity, youth empowerment, sustainability and technology, creating impact for generations to come.
The Italian tennis star also shared the message with his story and wrote: Proud to be part of the PIF family and super excited about the year ahead! Lots to look forward to.
But the announcement did not go down well with fans, who accused the former 28-year-old of signing the deal for money.

Saudi Arabia and the PIF have become increasingly involved in tennis. In addition to the PIFs deals with Berrettini, the ATP and the WTA, several tournaments have been held in the Kingdom this year.
The Next Gen ATP Finals – a tournament for top players aged 20 and under – moved to Jeddah at the end of 2023 on a five-year contract. Riyadh was the host city of this year's WTA Finals, won by Coco Gauff.
Like Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Jannik Sinner took part in the Six Kings Slam exhibition in Riyadh two months ago. And Nadal is also an ambassador of the Saudi Tennis Federation.
