MSU hockey travels to Minnesota to face two of the best players in the country

TV/Radio:Friday's game will air on Big Ten Network and can be streamed on the Fox Sports app. Saturday's match can be streamed on BTN-plus. Both games will be broadcast on WJIM 1240 AM.
All-time series: Minnesota is MSU's second-most played opponent behind Michigan, with the Gophers historically dominating the series with a 136-51-17 lead. MSU went 1-2-1 against Minnesota last season, with the two games in Minneapolis going into overtime (3-3 tie and MSU shootout win, 6-5 overtime for Minnesota).
Coaches: MSU coach Adam Nightingale is in his third season with the Spartans and has a record of 55-31-5. Minnesota coach Bob Motzko is 151-73-18 in his seventh season at the helm of Minnesota and has 414 wins in his 20 seasons coaching college hockey.
MSU update: MSU fell in the polls after splitting with Wisconsin last weekend, losing 4-0 on Friday before winning 3-2 in overtime to salvage a series split.
“It was a good end to the weekend (in Wisconsin), and now we've done a lot of work to prepare for this,” MSU captain Red Savage said. “When we play our game, we are the best team in the country, and we have gotten back to the point where we can play our game with confidence. We are not the most skilled team, but if we play the way we need to play, we can We're beating someone.”
Now MSU is gearing up for a top-level matchup between two top-ranked squads. The new No. 1-ranked Gophers welcome the Spartans to Minneapolis.
This weekend's matchup features the top two teams in the country in terms of overall winning percentage (Minnesota 15-2-1, .861; MSU 12-2-0, .857). It's a matchup between two of the highest scoring teams in the country (Minnesota averages 4.11 goals per game and is 2nd), and MSU 3.36 (7th), and two of the best defensive teams. MSU allows 1.71 goals against (second) and Minnesota allows 1.78 (fourth).
Scouting Minnesota: Minnesota jumped ahead of MSU to the No. 1 ranking after sweeping Michigan with back-to-back shutouts from goaltenders Liam Souliere and Nathan Airey.
This weekend, however, the Gophers could come up short. Forwards Mason Nevers and Aaron Huglen are likely out, and second-leading scorer Matthew Wood is away at Canada's World Junior Camp.
Minnesota is still extremely dangerous with Jimmy Snuggerud in the lineup, despite a late goal from Michigan's Evan Werner last week that resulted in Werner's suspension. The Gophers have an incredibly talented blue line capable of making a big impact on offense.
“(Minnesota) is very talented and skilled, but I think if you look at their back end, they make it hard to generate against them,” Nightingale said. “If it's going to be a track game, they've got guys who can execute, and we're going to have to be smart. It's a tough building to play in, but our guys are looking forward to it.”
Goaltending was the question mark for the Gophers to start the season, but it appears to have been resolved now. MSU will need to generate more offense to get a positive result this weekend.
