Bill Belichick's plan shows that UNC football is serious about competing
- By embracing Bill Belichick's plan for North Carolina, the Tar Heels are showing they are willing to go 'all in' on football.
- Bill Belichick's staff will make a pretty penny. Then there's the matter of funding the squad he needs to pull off a turnaround.
- An underachiever, a competent coach and a financial investment would provide North Carolina with a path to turnaround within the ACC.
Bill Belichick says we shouldn't believe a media report that he wooed North Carolina with a 400-page plan for success.
I have no idea where that came from. I don't have a 400-page document, Belichick said at his introductory press conference on Thursday. And to think that I would just give it up? I mean, come on.”
exhale, Tar heels fans. This should be a relief. I'm suspicious of anyone who needs a manifesto to find success. Either way, everyone has a plan until they face a vicious machine full of top talent.
What stands out to me more than Belichick's plan or even a legendary NFL coach wanting to revive his college football career is that North Carolina has stepped up to make this happen.
Implementing Belichick's plan, no matter how many pages it is, won't be cheap.
North Carolina hires Belichick and announces the Tar Heels are serious about becoming a much bigger force in college football philosophically and financially. Athletic director Bubba Cunningham confirmed Thursday that the Tar Heels will be all-in on football, just as they are with their blue-blooded basketball program.
Our future looks incredibly bright, Cunningham said.

UNC Football is making a financial commitment to Bill Belichick
This isn't a freak attempt by North Carolina to turn this season's 6-6 record into 7-5.
Belichick didn't come to North Carolina to make the Birmingham Bowl. He is serious about winning, and winning requires investment.
Now, as often as ever, money is talked about in college football. In this age of paying athletes, pauper programs won't have much chance of national fame. It doesn't matter who's on the sidelines if you don't have a pile of dollars to fund the operation.
The Tar Heels began by awarding Belichick a five-year contract. His annual salary is $10 million, excluding bonuses. That's a nugget of gold needed to compete with the big boys. Belichick will want to hire a top-notch coaching and player personnel staff. He has already appointed former NFL general manager Michael Lombardi as the team's general manager. Then there's the matter of funding a roster that can compete for the College Football Playoff.
It doesn't matter that the Tar Heels have won just three ACC games this season or that they've eclipsed nine wins just once in the last 27 seasons. Check out SMU. Two years ago, the Mustangs finished 7-6 in the American Athletic Conference. Now they are in the playoffs of their first ACC season, showing that a quick turnaround from the conference is possible.
Simply hiring Belichick, who won six Super Bowls as a head coach and two as a defensive coordinator, should inspire some belief in the booster class.
Belichick's term sheet, obtained by USA TODAY Sports, sets aside more than $16 million for assistant coaches, strength and conditioning staff and support staff, plus another $13 million for revenue sharing, presumably for athletes.
Bill Belichick can't simply outsmart his college peers
While Belichick's task in North Carolina shouldn't be considered impossible, we shouldn't make it easy either.
Belichick understands the game on a level that few do, but it's not enough to know Xs and Os. This isn't the same as Shohei Ohtani taking up Single-A baseball. Dabo Swinney knows the ball. That includes Kirby Smart, Steve Sarkisian and countless others.
Minds coach from the major leagues at this level, so revolutionizing North Carolina won't be as simple as rolling out the football and trying to outwit Belichick on his foes.
Some would compare UNC's momentous hire to Colorado rolling the dice with Deion Sanders, but Sanders brought college experience from his successful stint boosting Jackson State. Belichick has no experience with zippo in college ball.
Even as college football shifts toward a professional model, high school recruiting remains the bread and butter for the sport. Belichick has no experience convincing teenagers to come play for a 72-year-old man, and he will be playing catch-up in a sport run by top recruiters like Smart, Sarkisian and Oregon's Dan Lanning. Within the ACC, Mario Cristobal from Miami and Brent Key from Georgia Tech are performing well on the course.
Previous NFL coaches such as Herm Edwards, Lovie Smith and Bill Callahan failed as college coaches. Jim Harbaugh thrived at both levels, but unlike Belichick, Harbaugh started his coaching career in college. Dave Wannstedt found modest success with Pittsburgh after a long NFL career.
Lane Kiffin gradually found his way in college football after being dismissed from the NFL as a kid prodigy.
Nick Saban, Belichick's friend and college football GOAT, made a pit stop in the NFL, but he had already made a name for himself in the college game before Alabama hired him.
Saban was not only a defensive mastermind, but also became the greatest recruiter in sports history. A pretty good motivator too.
And while Saban could get grumpy, he oozes charisma compared to Belichick.
College football, while more like the NFL than it was a decade ago, is still not the NFL, and the list of former NFL coaches who failed as first college coaches is longer than those who succeeded.
Still, hiring Belichick might be worth the risk. If anything, it shows UNC's willingness to invest in football.
Forget the manifesto. Combine a competent coach with some money in the coffers, and you have a start on the road to success.
