Celina Football scores late against West Plains in the state semifinals
ABILENE The Celina football team won a state semifinal Friday night, defeating West Plains 43-36 at Shotwell Stadium to secure a spot in the Class 4A Division I state championship game.
The Bobcats (15-0, 6-0) and Wolves (11-4, 5-0) met in the fifth round of the playoffs after Celina defeated Wilmer-Hutchins, Kennedale, Aubrey and Alvarado in the first four rounds . West Plains defeated Clint, Brownwood, Lampasas and Stephenville to reach the state semifinals before falling to No. 1 seed Celina.
Slade Russell was the Wolves' main offensive catalyst, rushing for more than 130 yards and three touchdowns. For the Bobcats, junior quarterback Bowe Bentley also ran for three touchdowns and more than 100 yards.

Game-changing plays
Celina struck first, gaining a 14-0 lead on two touchdown runs from Bentley in the opening frame of the game. However, West Plains responded in the second quarter with a scoring run from Slade Russell and a touchdown pass from Reid Macon to Kane White-Tinsley as time expired in the first half.
The Wolves added a field goal to open the third quarter, but Bentley rushed for his third score of the game on the ensuing drive to give Celina a 21-17 lead. In the fourth quarter, both teams traded scores before the Bobcats wasted no time trying to put West Plains at the 35-yard line.
Russell scored his third touchdown of the night to put the Wolves ahead 36-35 with 2:36 left in the fourth quarter. However, the Bobcats were able to put together a quick touchdown drive in response and earn a thrilling 43-36 win.

West Plains head coach Adam Cummings: “I thought until the very last moment I thought we were going to win the game. That's just the belief I have in our kids. I think our whole team felt that way. I think we were exactly where we wanted to be .We We've been in this kind of fight before, but that wasn't the case. We thought the advantage was for us in this kind of situation, and it's a credit to Celina. They're a good football team. 1 .Their coaching staff is doing a great job so hard. A lot of the mistakes we made tonight were because we played against a good football team. Hats off to them and I wish them the best, but I'm very proud of our kids, just them. resilience and their ability to keep bouncing back and keep fighting back.”
West Plains runs back to Slade Russell: “I believe the coaches trust me a lot. They trust me to do my job and get the hard yards we need.”
West Plains wide receiver and defensive back Kane White-Tinsley: “They were finishing it (before halftime). I mean, if they had scored (14-7), it would have been a (big) change in the game. When I intercepted it, it felt great to grab (the ball) and bring it back to our attack.

With the win, Celina advances to the Class 4A Division I state championship game, where the Bobcats will meet Kilgore on Dec. 20 at 3 p.m. from AT&T Stadium in Arlington.
