Tim Southee reaches the top four during the farewell test

Tim South hit three sixes in the first innings of his farewell test match in Hamiltonto get closer to the elite group of hitters exceeding 100.

Former New Zealand captain Southee came into his final Test, at Seddon Park, with 95 sixes to his name. He came into bat at 272-8 amid a guard of honor with about half an hour of cricket remaining on the first day.

He missed the first ball he faced, from Ben Stokes, the leading six-hitter in Test cricket history. That was the end of it. At Stokess, Southee then hit two towering sixes, over mid-wicket and deep square leg, before taking a single off the fifth ball. He dismissed the first ball of the next over, from Gus Atkinson, also for six, over mid-wicket, and pushed the next ball almost to the point boundary.

However, Atkinson took revenge when Southee mistimed a slog from the next ball and Brydon Carse held the skier. Southee walked back for a 10-ball 23. The strike rate of 230 made it the third fastest Test innings by a New Zealand batsman with a 10-ball cut-off. In second place is another Southee blitz, the 10-ball 24 not out against Sri Lanka in 2019.

The second of his three sixes today took Southee to 97 sixes, comparable to Jacques Kallis in fifth place. The third helped him move into a tie with Chris Gayle in fourth. Two more sixes he has that second innings will make him the fourth cricketer to the milestone, while a third will take him past Adam Gilchrist's tally.

Three things make Southees' figures even more amazing. First of all, he has never been in the top seven. Secondly, he has hit sixes more times than anyone else. And three, he hasn't hit many fours.
