Meet the man from Kerala with a 100% winning record against World Chess Champion Gukesh
In 2015, a nine-year-old boy from Chennai lost to a seasoned chess player from Kozhikode in northern Kerala for the third time, including once at a national championship.
“Unkala mattum avanu jayikave mudiyala (he could never beat you),” the boy's father, Rajnikanth, casually remarked in Tamil to the victor, OT Anilkumar. They parted ways after exchanging pleasantries.
Anilkumar, or OT, as he is commonly known in the chess circuit, recalled the conversation as that father hugged his teary-eyed son, now an 18-year-old man, in a cozy hotel corridor in Singapore. That was D Gukesh, just after he defeated China's Ding Liren in the World Chess Championship.
In the past, hitting a child was not something to brag about. But try to find someone with an impeccable head-to-head record against a world champion. OT had white pieces in all three of his victories against Gukesh, according to the FIDE game record. “He played quite well,” recalls the seven-time Kerala state champion.
OT had met the future world champion at a crossroads in their careers. He was 52 and still going strong at the national level as Gukesh's journey began.
By 2015, OT had reached its peak, reaching a maximum Elo rating (a measure of players' relative skill) of 2316 in the same year Gukesh was born (2006). When they played, OT had an Elo rating of over 2100, while Gukesh's was around 2000, still an impressive rating for a boy who only started playing two years ago, at the age of 7.
Since then, Gukesh's career trajectory has steadily risen. In 2017 he already exceeded OT's all-time rating. Now Gukesh is ranked 5th in the world (Elo: 2783).
“It was great to see him become the youngest world champion. Both he and Ding played a great match,” said OT. When reminded again of his enviable record against the world champion, OT just smiled. The 61-year-old still participates and teaches chess.
