PRESIDENT of Tennis Jamaica, John Azar, says the All-Jamaica Championships which kick off today could see great performances over the next seven days. The tournament, which has seen a record number of entries, will take place at the Eric Bell Tennis Center from today until December 21.
“This week's All-Jamaica Championship promises to be an exceptional event. We have over 120 juniors who will be competing in the boys and girls divisions, over 100 entries in the amateur section and a full draw of 32 men competing in the pro section. Record numbers everywhere,” he said.
Azar added that the competition will also feature players from abroad and that the excitement level for the 2024 competition is at a fever pitch.
“The players are ready and raring to go. It is certainly one of the events on the local calendar that juniors, amateurs and professionals look forward to every year. We have a number of foreign-based Jamaicans in the draw who will compete for top honors,” he added.
Azar further explained that although the year 2024 is coming to an end, the start of these national championships will lead to a stacked 2025 season. Next year 2025, Jamaica will also be in action against New Zealand in Davis Cup action starting from 1 until February 2 at the Eric Bell Tennis Center.
“In addition to the All Jamaica National Championships starting tomorrow, Jamaica will host back-to-back ITF M15000 World Tennis Tour events on January 6 and 13. These events will see numerous professional players from all over the world come to Jamaica. and will enable some of our best local professionals to play against high-level competition and earn invaluable world rankings, right here on Jamaican soil,” said Azar.
