Undefeated Carmel defeats El Capitan in 5-AA state championship football game – San Diego Union-Tribune
FULLERTON — There's a reason Jackson Lloyd is headed to the University of Alabama on a football scholarship.
'He's good. He’s really good,” El Capitan football coach Ron Burner said before Friday night’s Division 5-AA State Championship game at Fullerton Union High School District Stadium.
The 6-foot-4, 290-pound two-way lineman wreaked havoc on El Capitan on both sides of the ball, harassing Vaqueros quarterback Brandt Barker while on defense and opening holes for running back Ashton Rees on offense when Carmel El Capitan 48 defeated. -7.
“He's pretty good,” said Vaqueros offensive lineman Dominic Jones, who checks in at 6-2, 285 pounds. “I've never met a man like him.”
Carmel, the North Division champion, finishes the season 15-0. The Padres have won 25 of their last 26 games through 2023.
El Capitan, which saw its ten-game winning streak snapped, finishes 11-4.
Carmel scored first, but El Capitan answered with a six-play, 60-yard drive. Brody Copp went the final two yards for the score and the game was tied 7-7 with 8:55 to play in the second quarter.
After that it was all Carmel. The Padres scored on six of their next eight possessions and hit El Capitan on big plays.
Quarterback Hudson Rutherford had completions of 16 and 26 yards on the Padres' next possession and threw a 15-yard TD pass to Rees.
Rutherford had a 21-yard completion and Rees had a 31-yard run on Carmel's next scoring drive, then Rutherford hit tight end Brooklyn Ashe with a 49-yard scoring pass.
Just before halftime, Rees ran 77 yards for a score.
Carmel opened the second half with a 14-play, 89-yard drive, with Rutherford throwing a 36-yard completion and then connecting with Rees for a 13-yard score.
The final Carmel drive was aided by a pass interference call on a fake punt, with Rutherford throwing an 8-yard TD strike to Ashe.
Carmel finished the game with 539 yards of total offense. The Padres passed for 309 yards and rushed for 230.
Rees, lining up in a Wildcat formation on short-yardage plays, finished with 17 carries for 166 yards. He also had two catches for 28 yards.
Rutherford completed 22 of 32 passes for 309 yards.
El Capitan quarterback Brandt Barker, who had thrown just five interceptions on 315 attempts this season, was 10 of 26 for 113 yards with Lloyd and David Spencer in his face for most of the game. He was intercepted four times.
“He was a beast,” Barker said of Lloyd. “He was a difference maker. They completely cut us off.”
The Vaqueros rushed just 12 times for 70 yards. Copp had four carries for 57 yards, including back-to-back carries of 28 and 10 yards early in the fourth quarterback play.
“I thought our defense could make the difference,” said Burner, whose team won the San Diego Section Division 4 championship and defeated Victorville Silverado last week to claim a Southern California regional title. “But that's a very good team we played against, a team with a superstar. We have nothing to be sad about. We played hard. We participated.
“I'm sorry it had to end like this for the seniors, especially the boys who were playing their last football game. But we are still champions.”
