MSU hockey rallies with four-goal third period in win at Minnesota
Trailing 3-1 midway through the third period, No. 3 Michigan State scored three unanswered goals in a span of 2:51 to regain the lead, then added an empty-net goal in the closing moments to cap a 5-3 comeback -victory to complete. No. 1 Minnesota on Saturday night in Minneapolis.
The win gives the Spartans five of a possible six points in the two-game weekend series.
Forward Isaac Howard started the rally after patiently skating into the offensive zone with numbers before firing a wrist shot past Minnesota goaltender Liam Souliere to cut Minnesota's lead to 3-2.
Two minutes later, forward Karsen Dorwart kept the puck alive before sliding a pass to a streaking Maxim Strbak, who whistled a shot off the post and over the goal line to tie the game.
Minnesota used its timeout after Strbak's goal, but it proved ineffective. Less than a minute after the second defender tied the score, junior forward Charlie Stramel found himself open in front of Minnesota's goal. After junior forward Daniel Russell kept the puck on the front line, senior forward Red Savage slid a pass to Stramel, who fired a shot over Souliere and under the crossbar.
Savage added an empty-net goal shot from MSU's defensive end with 35 seconds left to seal the victory for the Spartans, handing Minnesota its first conference loss in regulation.
Howard started the scoring in the second period, hitting a one-timer from the right circle past Souliere on a power play.
Minnesota responded two minutes later with a goal from Brody Ziemer before scoring two more goals ahead of MSU's rally.
This is MSU's first win in Minnesota since Feb. 8, 2020.
Sophomore goalie Trey Augustine made 24 saves and earned his 11th win of the season.
