WADA chief confirms important reason for appeal
The director general of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) has revealed the main reason why the organization appealed the initial ruling in the Jannik Sinner case.
World No. 1 Sinner tested positive for the banned steroid clostebol twice in March, although he successfully appealed a provisional ban both times.
The Italian was later found to have “no fault or negligence” by the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) after proving he had been accidentally infected.
Sinner claimed the substance got into his system after his former physiotherapist used a skin cream containing clostebol on his cut before massaging the world number one.
Despite a mixed public reaction following the revelation of the case in August, it appeared the case was close for the Italian – who won the US Open just weeks after the saga broke.
However, in October it was announced that WADA would appeal the initial ruling in Sinner's case to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).
A decision will not be announced until 2025, although Sinner faces a two-year ban if CAS rules in favor of WADA.
Spoke to yesterday AFPWADA director-general Olivier Niggli confirmed that the agency did not want to prove that Sinner was at fault, but disputed the level of responsibility he should have taken.

“The decision took into account that there was no fault on Sinner's part,” Niggli said.
“Our position is that there is still a responsibility of the athlete towards his entourage. So it is this legal point that will be discussed (before CAS).
“We do not dispute that it could be a contamination. But we believe that the application of the rules does not correspond to case law.”
Doping in tennis has been a hot topic of discussion in 2024.
The year started with Simona Halep's four-year ban sensationally reduced to nine months, with Sinner's case later followed by the news of Iga Swiatek being handed a one-month ban.
Like Sinner, Swiatek – who also claimed infection after testing positive on TMZ – was able to fight her case behind closed doors at the ITIA before a ruling was publicly announced.
This has been the subject of controversy, although Niggli revealed that the “first concern” should always be protecting an athlete.
He added: “Personally, I think protecting an athlete's reputation should be our primary concern.
“We live in a world where social media is what it is and means a reputation can go up in smoke in a very short time.”
