'Incredible breakthrough': Local tennis star named doubles player of the year
Liam Draxl won multiple tournaments in 2024 and is the top-ranked Canadian doubles player at number 132
Newmarket tennis star Liam Draxl has been recognized as one of the country's best players with a Tennis Canada men's doubles player of the year award.
Draxl was among Tennis Canada's list of top players released on December 10. The young tennis star has made waves with five ATP Challenger tour titles and enters the 2025 season on an eight-match winning streak in doubles, having won his last two tournaments. in Puerto Vallarta and Manzanillo. His victories have seen the 23-year-old become the highest-ranked player from Canada on the men's doubles circuit at 132nd.
Draxl also celebrated his birthday on December 5.

Draxl is coming off a winning season, recently becoming champion at the Manzanillo Open alongside Calagary tennis partner Cleeve Harper. In addition to five victories on the ATP tour, he also triumphed at the Edmonton National Bank Challenger in October, winning both the singles and doubles at the ITF M25 tournament.
The young tennis star grew up in Newmarket and played games with the local tennis clubs. He has long been a tennis phenomenon and has also become a top player at the junior level.
At the professional level, Draxl has a 51-24 match record as of 2024, according to the International Tennis Federation. According to ATP, he has also collected more than $48,000 in doubles prize money and more than $26,000 in singles prize money this year.
The community tennis club awaits its return home in the summer, in its new location.
