Beavers lose 0-1 after extra time to Grand Canyon University
PHOENIX, AZ – The Minot State Beavers men's hockey team lost 0-1 to Grand Canyon University in the second game of a two-game series on Saturday, December 14. The Beavers had an extremely successful road trip in Arizona going 2-0 -1 over the last three days. Over the past three days, Minot State has gone 1-0-0 against the University of Arizona and 1-0-1 against Grand Canyon University. The Beaver's record now goes to 18-2-3, while Grand Canyon University improved to 8-8-1.
The battle between the goalkeepers was the story of the 60 minutes of regulation in this match. Minot State's goaltender, Jake Anthonymaking 10 saves in the first period, 5 saves in the second period and 6 saves in the third period, for a total of 21 saves on 21 shots on goal. Grand Canyon goaltender Dmytro Kubrytskyi recorded 5 saves in the first period, 15 saves in the second period and 10 saves in the third period for a total of 30 saves on 30 shots on goal. Regulation would end in a 0–0 tie, sending this match to overtime.
Grand Canyon wasted no time in the overtime period as Jack Thomas scored the winning goal 51 seconds into the period to secure the 0-1 overtime win.
Minot State's penalty kill unit was strong in this match as the Beavers were 2 for 2 in penalty kills. Minot State goalkeeper, Jake Anthonywas stellar in net for the Beavers as they shut out Grand Canyon in regulation, notching 21 saves on 22 shots on goal.
Following Minot State's three-game road trip in Arizona, the Beavers will return to action at home after the new year in a two-game series against Midland University. The two-game series is scheduled for Saturday, January 4 at 3:30 PM and Sunday, January 5 at 4:30 PM at the Maysa Arena.
