ITTF launches updated World Para Ranking system ahead of the 2025 Para Table Tennis Circuit
The International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) today introduced the ITTF World Para Ranking, a modernized ranking system that aligns with the recently restructured ITTF World Para Circuit that will make its debut in 2025.
This comprehensive refresh represents a milestone for Para table tennis, designed to take the sport to the next level, increase player participation and ensure a fair and competitive environment. The updated system includes feedback from ITTF member associations, coaches and players, with the aim of creating a more inclusive and dynamic ecosystem for para-table tennis athletes worldwide.
Key features of the new ITTF World Para Ranking
The rankings are determined based on the six best results of a player or pair in the previous year, with specific restrictions to ensure fairness (e.g. a maximum of one result from limited participation events and two results from U23 competitions). They cover the senior (all players) and U23 categories in 11 classes.
Ranking points are awarded based on the final standings at sanctioned events, with higher level events such as the Paralympic Games and World Championships offering up to 2,000 points for champions. Points remain valid for one year and expire on the anniversary week of their withdrawal.
Players no longer lose points for match losses, reducing mental stress and promoting a growth-oriented competitive atmosphere.
Rankings are published weekly in multiple categories, including men's and women's singles, doubles and mixed doubles (for both pairs and individuals).
The updated ranking system is seamlessly integrated into the restructured Para Table Tennis Series, which now has three competitive levels: Future, Challenger and Elite. These levels are intended to cater to players of different levels and stages of development, ensuring greater opportunities for competition and progression.
A transition to growth
To ensure a smooth transition, players' current rankings are converted into initial points based on a carefully calculated formula. This phased approach will allow athletes to adapt to the new system, with points being gradually replaced as players participate in events throughout the year.
