Matthew Petgrave: Crowdfunding for hockey players for legal fees following the death of fellow athlete Adam Johnson

Canadian hockey player Matthew Petgrave has started crowdfunding to cover his legal costs related to the death of fellow hockey player Adam Johnson.

Johnson, who played for the Nottingham Panthers in England, died last October after suffering a cut to the neck in a collision with another player during a match against the Sheffield Steelers.

A coroner from Sheffield report A publication in November last year revealed that the 29-year-old suffered a laceration to the neck caused by another player's skate, and later died in hospital as a result of the injury.

Petgrave identifies himself on CrowdJustice as being involved in (the) tragic accident and says he is seeking help to cover some of my legal costs while I am subject to a police bail bond, as well as additional costs if the case goes to criminal court comes.

CrowdJustice confirmed to CNN that the page is owned by Petgrave.

He says he initially had insurance coverage but it was stopped through no fault of my own.

The time and costs involved in the legal investigation and any legal proceedings are difficult for me to cover on a privately funded basis.

This is especially challenging as my UK visa has expired, meaning I can no longer work as a professional ice hockey player while I still require legal assistance, he adds.

CNN has contacted Burton Copeland, the law firm listed on the crowdfunding page as representing Petgrave, for comment.

Petgrave also thanked everyone who has supported me, including my teammates, fellow players and league staff, who have supported me from the beginning and continue to do so. Your support has been invaluable to me and my family during this incredibly difficult time.

As of Tuesday, the crowdfunding page had raised 8,800 (over $11,000) of its 300,000 (approximately $379,300) at the time of publication.

Last November, South Yorkshire Police announced that a man, whom they did not name, had been released on bail following his arrest on suspicion of manslaughter in connection with Johnson's death.

Our investigation began immediately after this tragedy and we have since carried out extensive investigations to piece together the events that led to Adam's loss in these unprecedented circumstances, Chief Inspector Becs Horsfall said in a police statement at the time.

We have spoken to highly specialist experts in their fields to help us with our investigations and continue to work closely with Sheffield City Council's Health and Safety Department, who are supporting our ongoing investigation.

Police issued further public updates in April and June saying the man had been released on bail again. No one has been charged in the case.

The force's last public update came in November this year, with Chief Inspector Benjamin Wood saying: We have worked diligently to fully understand the unprecedented circumstances in which Adam sadly lost his life.

This complex investigation into Adams' death continues and we continue to work closely with the Crown Prosecution Service. Our thoughts remain with the Adams family wholeheartedly at this time.
