History-making Tapper ready to embark on coaching career Victorian Institute of Sport

Table tennis pioneer Melissa Milly Tapper will mentor the next generation of Olympians, Paralympians and Commonwealth Games athletes after being named to the Australian Institute of Sport's (AIS) second Gen32 Coach program.

Established in 2022 to increase depth and diversity within Australia's high-end coaching ranks ahead of the home games in Brisbane, AIS Gen32 offers emerging or early-career coaches a two-year paid internship in the country's elite sports programs.

Tapper, who made history at the 2016 Rio Games when she became the first Australian athlete to compete in both the Olympic and Paralympic Games, is part of a 30-strong group of emerging coaches who will work across 23 sports.

The long-term VIS fellow repeated this feat at both the Tokyo 2020 Games(21) and the most recent Paris 2024 Games.

Those close to her now affectionately call her the 'Triple Double'.

Last week she announced her retirement from the sport and now she is ready to make an impact from the sidelines.

I am excited about the new challenges ahead. “I have had a long and fruitful career as an athlete and am more than ready to end it and put my energy into coaching,” Tapper said.

As part of the Gen32 program, I hope I can continue to develop my skills as a coach and develop strong networks with the other Gen32 coaches to bring the best impact to table tennis performance in Australia.

AIS Executive General Manager of AIS Performance Matti Clements announced in a press release on Tuesday that coaching is a key focus in the remaining eight years for the 2032 Brisbane Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The AIS Gen32 Coach Program is a partnership with our national sports organizations and the National Institute Network, providing 29 coaches with a career-changing experience during the first two years of the program, Clements said.

More than half of the emerging group of Gen32 coaches are women and one of them is former VIS cycling scholarship holder Samantha de Riter, who will be the AusCycling and VIS Gen32 coach.

De Riter held a fellowship at the VIS from 2014 to 2020, where she was deeply involved in VIS community programs as a host and speaker of the VIS Tour.
