Netflix to Show 10 SEC Football Shows in Drive to Survive-Style Docuseries in 2024 Season
The SEC and Netflix have teamed up to provide a behind-the-scenes look at the 2024 football season, with 10 of the 16 schools, including Tennessee, on their way to a College Football Playoff berth.
The series is produced by the same company that produced other Netflix sports projects, including Full Swing, which offers a behind-the-scenes look at the PGA Tour, and Formula 1: Drive to Survive. Netflix said the film will air in eight 45-minute episodes next summer.
The participating schools are Arkansas, Auburn, Florida, Kentucky, LSU, Mississippi State, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas A&M and Vanderbilt, said a source briefed on the details of the show.
Production was reported by The Athletics in early June, with neither side confirming that no deal had been struck. Netflix moved on after striking deals with more than half of the conference schools.
All 16 SEC schools were given the opportunity to participate, said SEC spokesman Herb Vincent, who indicated the series could continue this year.
When a majority of member schools expressed interest in participating, the SEC partnered with Netflix to produce the series, with the understanding that schools may or may not participate in subsequent years, Vincent said.
In a release, Netflix said the series places viewers inside some of college football's most storied programs in the SEC through unfiltered access to their coaches and players on and off the field: on the buses, in the locker rooms, in the barbershops, everywhere in the world. fire pits, running out of the tunnels and more.
There was some initial reluctance from SEC teams, who worried about giving too much access to an outside network, sources around the conference say. But there was also some concern that if the SEC refused, Netflix would go to the Big Ten, and ultimately the conference and the majority of schools would be attracted to the opportunity to advertise their programs in a different way.
This behind-the-scenes docuseries will bring all the drama and pageantry of Southeastern Conference Football to a global Netflix audience, SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey said in a statement.
