Pack your bags, Penn State football fans: frigid air, snow in store for the College Football Playoff game
The coldest air of the year arrives in central Pa. this weekend just as Penn State fans gather outside for the first round of the College Football Playoffs in State College.
In addition, the competition Saturday coincides with the winter solstice, the shortest day of the year, when the Earth's axis reaches its maximum tilt away from the sun.
Fans heading to the game should be prepared: dress in layers, including a heavy jacket or windbreaker, be sure to wear a hat and gloves, and consider bringing a blanket or hand warmers.
Temperatures will start to drop on Wednesday afternoon and rain is expected. On Thursday morning the rain will change to snow showers and locally sleet. Thursday night should be dry but dreary with evening temperatures in the low 20s and low clouds, which will reduce visibility somewhat, according to the National Weather Service.
On Friday, light snow or snow showers may fall in the area, especially after 1 p.m., with temperatures around 35 degrees. Meteorologists predict snow accumulation of less than half an inch.
After that, it will be very cold, with highs in the 20s to 30s, the National Weather Service reported.
The cold temperatures will cool the ground enough to allow any snow that falls Friday to stick to untreated or elevated surfaces, the National Weather Service said.
AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Bob Larson said this will be the coldest air of the season so far from late Friday through Sunday.
Fans attending football games in State College, Pennsylvania, South Bend, Indiana and Columbus, Ohio should prepare for freezing temperatures and gusty winds Friday and Saturday, AccuWeather reported.
Although temperatures will continue to drop into the low 20s on Saturday, skies will be partly sunny, the NWS meteorologist reported.
But sunshine will be limited as Saturday will be the shortest day of the year.
After December 21, the days will grow longer and the sun's intensity will increase, slowly at first and then more dramatically as we get closer to the vernal equinox around March 21, according to AccuWeather Founder and Executive Chairman Dr. Joel Myers.
Even colder conditions are expected Sunday as the Arctic high builds over Northwestern Pennsylvania during the evening, producing single digit temperatures Monday morning.
Monday morning it will be warm to 26 degrees and sunny. Despite the colder air temperatures, wind levels will be on the lighter side, meteorologists said. On Monday evening the temperature will drop again to around 16 degrees.
