Michigan is reportedly landing Alabama transfer Damon Payne, but not officially
The Belleville to Ann Arbor pipeline appears to still be hot.
Former top-50 high school recruit and Alabama defensive tackle Damon Payne announced his decision to enter the transfer portal earlier this week. On Wednesday, he reportedly decided to come home and join Michigan's football program, 20 minutes west of his hometown. However, On3 has since reported that the move is not yet official as the papers have not yet been signed.
He would be the third former Tiger to commit to the Wolverines this month, joining incoming freshman quarterback Bryce Underwood and defensive back Elijah Dotson.
During the Jim Harbaugh era, relations between UM and the Belleville staff (namely with former coach Jermaine Crowell) were not in the best of terms. This is another sign that is changing, although nothing is official.
At 6-foot-1 and 315 pounds, Payne redshirted his freshman year in 2021, played in six games in 2022 and then appeared in eight games in 2023 as a rotation player on the sideline. Most recently, Payne recorded fourteen tackles and one fumble in eight games in 2024.

The goal is for him to replace some of what UM loses in the middle of the line in Mason Graham and possibly Kenneth Grant, who has yet to make a decision.

This is not an unexpected move at all. Payne was the No. 9 available defensive lineman in the transfer portal, according to 247Sports' composite rankings, and fits into what could be a position of need for the Wolverines down the stretch.
The Wolverines will face Payne's former team for a second time in 2024 in the ReliaQuest Bowl on Dec. 31 (noon, ESPN) in Tampa, Florida. The former Tide trench man recorded one tackle against UM in the Rose Bowl last year.
