First-year coach Spencer Danielson is working on a new contract with BSU
With discussions ongoing, Danielson's main concern is compensating those around him.
BOISE, Idaho Boise State is working on a new contract for first-year head football coach Spencer Danielson, athletics director Jeramiah Dickey said.
“You couldn't ask for a better teammate,” Dickey told KTVB exclusively while in New York for the Heisman Trophy presentation. “What [Danielson’s] done in a very short time, he earned it, and I'm going to do everything I can to make sure he's a Bronco.
Danielson, 36, went 3-1 and won a Mountain West Championship last season as interim head coach before being promoted to the full-time role. The Broncos followed that with a 12-1 record, another Mountain West championship and a berth to the first-ever 12-team College Football Playoff this season.
With discussions ongoing, Danielson's main concern is compensating those around him.
“When I have these conversations with coaches, I ask, 'What's important to you?' The first thing out of his mouth without hesitation was, “JD, I want to take care of my coaches and our people,” Dickey said “You want a guy like that in your foxhole. His first priority was his staff and then obviously collectively and supporting our student-athletes.”
Danielson signed a five-year contract worth at least $6.5 million last season. It also included a one-time signing bonus of $35,000, potential retention bonuses due in 2027 and 2029, and other academic and athletic incentives that could be worth an additional $200,000 annually.
Despite going 15-2 and being the first coach to ever lead the Broncos to back-to-back Mountain West Championships, Danielson was just the sixth-highest paid head football coach in the 11-team conference this season. He also makes far less than other coaches in the College Football Playoff, according to USA Today's coaching salary database.
