What Alabama football expects from Richard Young at ReliaQuest Bowl
Richard Young's chance to make an impact may have officially arrived for Alabama football.
Young, a former four-star running back and a top-60 player in the class of 2023 according to 247Sports' composite rankings, was Alabama's third-string starter in 2024, rushing for 140 yards and two touchdowns on 25 carries. That's 54 fewer carries than Judge Haynes and 110 fewer than Jam Miller, neither of whom were Crimson floods leading rusher. Quarterback Jalen Milroe, with 719 yards rushing yards and 20 rushing touchdowns on 152 carries, led the Tide's rushing attack this season.
But Young's time may have come.
Haynes entered the transfer portal on Dec. 13, leaving the Crimson Tide without a No. 2 running back for an offense that has had at least two players with 100 rushing attempts in each of the last three seasons.
In Young, Alabama football coach Kalen DeBoer sees a running back ready for his opportunity.
If someone at their position leaves, there are more opportunities to take advantage of, DeBoer said. So yeah, I'm glad Rich has been highlighted more with more features and games to show everyone what he can do.
Young is a weapon who has the full support of Alabama offensive coordinator Nick Sheridan.
We have a lot of confidence in Richard, Sheridan said. He has maximized the opportunities he has had so far this fall. And we have full confidence in him in the game to do his job and do it at a high level.
But Young isn't the only Alabama back looking for his chance to shine.
With the expected return of Miller, who has one season of collegiate eligibility remaining, Young is also expected to share a room with 2024 four-star running backs Kevin Riley and Daniel Hill.
Hill appeared in eight games as a true freshman, both as a running back and on special teams, rushing for 61 yards and his first collegiate touchdown, a 2-yard run against Western Kentucky on 21 carries. Riley redshirted his freshman season, tallying 10 carries and 30 yards rushing in performances against Western Kentucky and Mercer.
In Alabama's most recent non-College Football Playoff bowl game, a 45-20 Sugar Bowl win against Kansas State running back Jahmyr Gibbs received the bulk of the carries, rushing for 76 yards and 66 yards receiving on 17 touches. But three other backs Miller, Jase McClellan and Roydell Williams, who formed the bulk of the Crimson Tides 2023 run game, combined for nearly half of Alabama's total carries.
Young might not be the first running back on the field at the ReliaQuest Bowl against Michigan. But based on what Young has done, with DeBoer describing him as a strong running back with plenty of tools to work with, he should get his share of touches to close out 2024.
Rich will be ready to go, just like he always is, DeBoer said.
Alabama will face Michigan in the 2024 ReliaQuest Bowl on December 31 at 11 a.m. CT in Tampa, Florida.
