MSU Men's Tennis alumni and sports ambassador Rick Ferman has passed away
EAST LANSING, MI — Rick Ferman, Michigan State men's tennis alum and ambassador for the sport of tennis, died last weekend at the age of 74.
Ferman played for MSU men's tennis from 1968-71, lettering in 1970 and '71. He was the Big Ten runner-up at No. 6 singles as a sophomore in 1970, posting a 10–0 regular season record, winning 20 sets and dropping only two during the regular season.
A native of Grosse Pointe, Michigan, Ferman received his bachelor's degree in social sciences in 1972 and his master's degree from MSU in 1973 in secondary education and teaching, intramural sports and recreation services administration.
He was the 2002 recipient of the MSU Varsity S Jack Breslin Lifetime Achievement Award, in honor of the Spartan varsity alumnus whose post-college career brought great honor to himself, and through reflection on Michigan State and its intercollegiate athletics programs.
Ferman went on to teach and coach, eventually becoming an administrator and manager. He also co-owned athletic clubs Court One North in Lansing and Court One East in Okemos. In 1991, Ferman was named America's Number One Tennis Club Professional by the USTA and Court One was named the nation's “Membership Organization of the Year” by the USTA.
He coached pro Todd Martin, starting when Martin was a junior player and growing Martin into a Top 5 player, two-time Grand Slam finalist and a dedicated representative for the US in Davis Cup play. Ferman later developed the Todd Martin Development Fund which supports the Lansing chapter of the National Junior Tennis League.
Ferman developed numerous grassroots programs in Michigan, and nationally he volunteered, worked and served at all levels of the USTA, including as USTA Midwest President. In addition, Ferman has served on more than 15 national USTA committees, including as chairman of the Player Development Committee, the Section Presidents Committee and the USTA Delegates Assembly. He has served as President of the USTA/Midwest Section Junior Tennis Council, Section Endorser and member of the Education and Recreation Tennis Committee. From 1995 to 1996, he served as vice president of the USTA Board of Directors.
He subsequently served as Executive Director and Chief Operating Officer of USTA from 1996 to 2003, where he oversaw an exciting period of growth and development for the tennis and club sports. His vision and vitality were the key ingredients in bringing tennis from grassroots to the biggest stage: the US Open. During Ferman's time in this role, Arthur Ashe Stadium was completed, business units focused on community and professional tennis were established, and the first USTA Strategic Plan was developed. He was inducted into the USTA/Midwest Section Hall of Fame in 2016, in addition to the United States Professional Tennis Association's Midwest Hall of Fame.

As CEO of the USTA, Ferman helped run the US Open, select the teams for the Davis Cup, Fed Cup, Pan American Games and Olympic Games, and promoted the growth of tennis from grassroots to professional level, with a huge increase in the USTA's popularity. sports in the United States and around the world.
