Nadal's letter was published in English and SpanishThe Players' Stand. He begins by recalling a tennis loss when he was twelve years old, and how the advice he received from his uncle shaped him for years to come.

“When I was young I learned a lesson that still lingers in my life,” he wrote, saying he has always loved the sea and fishing. “One day I went fishing when I could have trained. The next day I lost my match.”

He shared that he cried. “It's okay, it's just a tennis match,” his uncle said. “Now don't cry, there's no point. If you want to fish, you can fish. No problem. But you'll lose. If you want to win? If you want to win, then you gotta do what you gotta do first.

Nadal revealed that this lesson is one he has chased throughout his career, which is why many labeled him a perfectionist. “The voice has never left me. One day I can be by the sea. Today and tomorrow I have to practice,” he wrote.
