Neenah native Matt Jung is committed to Wisconsin football
MADISON Matt Jung took the long road to Wisconsin.
The former Neenah High School standout spent his first two seasons in college playing at Bethel, a Division III program in St. Paul, Minnesota, that plays in the highly ranked Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC).
The experience prepared Jung, a 6-foot-4, 215-pound safety, to make the jump to Division I ball.
He committed to UW on Thursday night after announcing nine Division I offers. He is the second safety Badgers added this week. Matt Traynor, formerly of FCS Richmond, announced his commitment on Monday.
Jung, who played with Badgers 2025 recruit Grant Dean, was a two-way standout for the Rockets, earning first-team all-conference honors as an inside linebacker and second-team honors as a dual-threat quarterback.
At Bethel he made the transition to safety and thrived.
As a freshman, he led the team with 72 tackles, including 4.5 tackles for loss. He also intercepted seven passes.
This year, he led the Royals with 109 tackles, including 10.5 for loss and two sacks. He intercepted nine passes, broke up two others and forced two fumbles.
He led the nation in interceptions. He returned four of his picks for touchdowns, tying a Division III record. His tackle total ranked 13th.
The Associated Press named him the national defensive player of the year. He was also one of 18 semifinalists for the Gagliardi Trophy, which is awarded to the top player in Division III.
He entered the transfer portal on Tuesday. Over the next 24 hours, he announced nine Division I offers to X: Eastern Michigan, Kent State, UTEP, Buffalo, Washington State, Montana, Western Michigan, Iowa State and Wisconsin. With the Badgers, he helps fill the void left by the loss of Hunter Wohler, who completed his eligibility, and Braedyn Moore and Kamoi Latu, who left through the portal.
