Some say the word is derived from “hussar,” which was used to describe the public nuisance on the Kentucky frontier.
The most common theory, however, is that the word was used as a greeting, as those approaching someone else's house during the days of the frontier shouted “hello the hut” from a distance to avoid being shot. Over time, these people became known as Hoosiers.
Indiana Historical Bureau estimates that the nickname first appeared around the 1830s and probably first appeared in writing in John Finley from Richmond's poem, “The Hoosier's Nest.”
