Sussex Paralympian Will Bayley at East Grinstead Hospital
Table tennis champion Will Bayley dropped by the Queen Victoria Hospital in East Grinstead with his Paralympic medals to meet some of the young patients who were spending time there.
The former Strictly Come Dancing contestant also spoke to hospital staff and even gave a child the chance to wear his Rio 2016 gold medal around his neck.
Will, who plays for Brighton Tennis Table Club, said: I spent a lot of my life in hospital, especially until I was seven, when I had a number of operations on my legs, and when I was diagnosed with blood cancer.
In fact, I was in the hospital when my Grandma Mary came to visit and bought me a mini table tennis table. Once I started playing it, I was able to beat my older brother, so I decided I would continue with it.
Nowadays it is difficult to meet young patients when you are in the hospital. It's really not where you want to be, but these places, the experience they go through, can make sure they are there.
My mother, Chrissie, said that to me when I was seven, and I didn't believe her. But that did happen. The journey I have been on has given me the strength and resilience to always keep going, bounce back and live the life I have had.
I say this to patients when I see them in the hospital, or to people I meet who may be going through a difficult time physically: You can get through this, this will make you, stay positive. It's what got me to the top in my career.
Will's visit also saw him reunited with Queen Victoria Hospital Department Manager Kim Brinkworth, who was also the Chief Nurse for the Paralympics GB at the Paris 2024 Games.
The seven-time medalist was part of the GB Paralympics table tennis team, which included Brighton schoolgirl Bly Twomey, who won multiple medals this year.
