Indian players wear black armbands at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. Here's why
The Indian cricket team wore black armbands on the second day of the fourth Test against Australia as a mark of respect for former Indian Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) said, sharing images of the field.
Australia resumed day two at 311 for 6 at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. “The Indian team will wear black armbands as a mark of respect in memory of the late former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh,” the BCCI said in a statement.
Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh died in New Delhi on Thursday. He was 92. He breathed his last at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) on Thursday.
Singh was taken to a hospital in New Delhi on Thursday after he lost consciousness at home on Thursday due to age-related ailments. He could not be resuscitated and was later declared dead, according to a statement from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences.
Singh, also a renowned economist, was the architect and brainchild of the 1991 economic reforms that brought India back from the brink of bankruptcy and ushered in an era of economic liberalization, widely credited with changing the course of India's economic trajectory .
According to reports, seven days of national mourning will be declared. The cabinet will meet at 11 a.m. to offer condolences. The Last Rites of Dr. Manmohan Singh will be executed with full state honours, she added.

“Millions of us who admired him will remember him with the utmost pride,” Gandhi said.
Mallikarjun Kharge, the Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, said: “India has lost a visionary statesman, a leader of unquestionable integrity and an economist of unparalleled stature.”
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also recalled Manmohan Singh saying, “India mourns the loss of one of its most eminent leaders, Dr. Manmohan Singh Ji. He grew up from humble beginnings and grew into a respected economist. His interventions in parliament were also illuminating. Prime Minister, he has made extensive efforts to improve people's lives.”
President Droupadi Murmu wrote on X that Singh “will always be remembered for his service to the nation, his unblemished political life and his utmost humility”.
