College football bowl games today: The schedule includes five showdowns
The college football bowling season kicks into high gear in the coming days as the new year approaches. The Friday lineup consists of five games, with the so-called Power Four competitions well represented. The slate includes one Top 25 teamalthough that could be involved in one of the biggest mismatches of the day.
Today's action is mainly taking place in warm-weather cities, so if you want those on the sidelines doing their utmost to stay out of the cold, you'll have to wait until tomorrow.
Here's a quick look at Friday's games, starting in the Texas Metroplex before heading east and then west.
Time/TV/location: Noon ET, ESPN, Fort Worth, Texas.
Why watch: Fresh off their momentous feat of overthrowing the army, the Midshipmen hope to complete a double-digit victory campaign. The Soon had a rough debut season in the SEC, but picked up a notable win against Alabama along the way. Navy QB Blake Horvath amassed 2,365 yards of offense and a total of 28 touchdowns, and he will once again make extensive use of FB Alex Tecza and SB Eli Heidenrich. A slew of Oklahoma players are transferring, so freshman QB Michael Hawkins Jr. won't have many experienced ballhandlers to work with. The Sooners will have to establish their run game and shut down the Midshipmen's option.
Why it might disappoint: As long as Navy avoids putting the ball on the ground, they'll be fine. Preparing for an academy attack is difficult enough, even with extra practice time, so how the Shorthanded Sooners handle it will go a long way in determining whether it will be close.

Why watch: These academic institutions scored a number of signature wins over their respective conferences, creating one of the bowl lineup's most intriguing combinations. It's already been an eventful offseason for Commodores QB Diego Pavia, who won another year of collegiate eligibility on the court. He and TE Eli Stowers should be there for this. Yellow jackets QB Haynes King battled injuries for much of the season, but should also be available, along with RB Jamal Haynes.
Why it might disappoint: That shouldn't be the case. These are programs that have to be pretty excited to be treated to the bowl experience. Both teams are focused on ball control, so the score must remain within reach for everyone.
Time/TV/location: 7:00 PM ET, ESPN, Memphis, Tenn.
Why watch: It's an old Southwest Conference reunion here on the banks of the Mississippi, marking just the schools' third meeting since Arkansas joined the SEC in 1992. Razorbacks leads the all-time series 29-8, but the Red Raiders last met in 2015. The current season has been a mixed bag for both programs, but both can claim a win against a playoff participant. The Razorbacks backfield tandem of QB Taylen Green and RB JaQuinden Jackson does most of their work in the ground game. The Red Raiders will not start QB Behren Morton due to injury, leaving freshman Will Hammond to lead the charge in his first start. RB Tahj Brooks has been practicing, but could opt to save himself for the draft.
Why it might disappoint: If it does get away, it would likely mark a good night for the Red Raiders with the more explosive offense. The Razorbacks will have to have the ball for a long time to keep it in their hands.
Time/TV/location: 8pm ET, Fox, San Diego.
Why watch: You have to feel sorry for the Washington State fans who have endured a challenging year. Despite seeing their conference disband, they enjoyed a strong start to the 2024 season, only to see nearly everyone in charge, both players and coaches, out the door. The remaining Cougars will be led by interim coach Pete Kaligis in this game with Jake Dickert heading to Wake Forest. Zevi Eckhaus will make his first start at QB for Washington State in the game, and he can at least take solace in the presence of top WR Kyle Williams on his team. The Dutch team, which ended the regular season with a stunning comeback win against Miami, has fewer personnel problems. QB Kyle McCord, WR Jackson Meeks and TE Oronde Gadsden will look to keep their late-season momentum going.
Why it might disappoint: The Cougars will do their best, but it's hard to see how they can put a competitive product on the field given all the turnover. The Dutch team should have this in their hands in the short term.
Time/TV/location: 10:30 PM ET, ESPN, Las Vegas.
Why watch: This isn't where either of these branded programs had hoped to end the season, but both should still draw a large number of fans to this popular destination. The Aggies were in the mix for their conference championship for considerably longer and were not officially eliminated until their final loss to Texas. Not much went right for the Trojan horses after September, but they at least got a rivalry win against UCLA to become bowl eligible. The QB job at A&M will permanently belong to Marcel Reed going forward, prompting Opening Day starter Conner Weigman to enter the portal. Reed will unfortunately be without the services of injured RB LeVeon Moss, but Amari Daniels has done a good job stepping in. USC also made an interim change at QB, turning to Jayden Maiava. However, he believes he will be less useful with other playmakers as WR Zachariah Branch leaves and RB Woody Marks retires after an injury in the regular season finale.
Why it might disappoint: It is conceivable that both sides can see if things go badly, but hopefully there are enough playmakers to keep things interesting until the early hours.
