Chinese table tennis stars Fan Zhendong and Chen Meng leave the world rankings
BEIJING Renowned Chinese table tennis stars Fan Zhendong and Chen Meng announced their withdrawal from the world rankings on December 27, citing new rules imposed by World Table Tennis (WTT).
According to their social media announcements, they both formally signed a notice declaring their retirement from all events sanctioned by the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) on December 23.
As defined in the ITTF Bylaws, ITTF sanctioned events include those sanctioned by WTT.
Fan, the reigning men's singles champion at the Paris Olympics, shared the news on the morning of December 27.
He stated that he cannot comply with WTT's new regulations, which impose fines on players who do not participate in events, and that he cannot afford to pay them.
However, he stressed that this decision does not mean he is retiring from the sport. Instead, he plans to continue participating in various tournaments and contributing to the table tennis community.
I am still me. I'm not retiring. I will continue to work hard to participate in more different competitions, Fan added.
He did not compete in the recent WTT finals held in Japan in November and has not played in WTT competitions since June.
Chen, who successfully retained her Olympic title against world No. 1 Sun Yingsha in the women's singles final in Paris, announced in the afternoon that she was withdrawing from the world rankings.
She noted that WTT's new regulations regarding penalties for withdrawing from competitions were a difficult choice for her, as her constant physical challenges made it impossible for her to participate in every high-intensity tournament.
Since my body cannot withstand intense competition, out of respect for the international organization, I signed the form on Monday and made the choice to withdraw from the world rankings, she said on Weibo.
Both Fan and Chen had excellent performances at the Paris Games, winning gold medals in both the singles and team events, but neither has competed in any international competition since their Olympic triumph.
The ITTF rankings, which are dynamically updated, are dependent on player performance over a rolling schedule of sanctioned events.
The incident is similar to that of late in badminton.
Two-time Olympic and world champion Viktor Axelsen lashed out at the Badminton World Federation (BWF) on social media on December 4, noting that he was fed up with the rift between players and BWF.
The Danish world number 4 had withdrawn from the December 11-15 BWF World Tour Finals in Hangzhou, China due to a left foot injury and disagreed with the global governing bodies' response to his withdrawal.
