The father of Ole Miss football signee Jarcoby Hopson Jr. murdered in Memphis
The father of Ole Miss football signee Jarcoby Hopson Jr. was fatally stabbed to death at a Kroger distribution warehouse in Memphis, Tennessee.
Anderson Todd, 55, has been arrested and charged with manslaughter in the death of 39-year-old Jarcoby Hopson. According to an affidavit written by a Memphis police officer, the stabbing occurred after an argument.
Jarcoby Hopson Jr., a 6-foot-1, 205-pound linebacker from Lake Cormorant High School in Mississippi, signed with Ole ma'am on December 4. He was a 2024 Dandy Dozen selection.
Hopson was an assistant football coach at Lake Cormorant. He coached defensive backs. His son wrote an emotional post on social media, calling his father his role model.
Police responded just before 9 a.m. Thursday to a report of injuries at the warehouse, located at 5709 Bledsoe Road. When they arrived, according to the affidavit, they found Jacoby Hopson “suffering from multiple lacerations to the upper body, right thigh, left upper arm and left forearm.”
“A witness, Michael Tricksey, stated that he heard a loud argument and saw Jacoby Hopson get off his forklift, walk up to Anderson Todd and invite him to an area of the warehouse where there were no cameras so they could fight,” the statement said. “Witness Tricksey stated that Anderson Todd refused to fight Jacoby Hopson, which is when Hopson pulled Todd's hat over his face and covered his eyes.”
After Todd removed the yarmulke, he exited the forklift and the two men began pushing each other, the affidavit said.
“… Tricksey stated that he then saw Todd swing his arm at Hopson in a stabbing motion. Witness Tricksey stated that he heard Hopson tell Todd to stop stabbing him,” the affidavit said.
Tricksey told police he tried to separate the two and saw Hopson walk away and collapse. Todd walked away from the area, the affidavit said, and remained in the cafeteria until police arrived.
Another witness, who did not see the altercation, told police he had heard Hopson and Todd arguing earlier. That witness, Bryan Rogers, ran toward the commotion when he heard screaming. Police said both Rogers and Tricksey identified Todd in a photographic lineup.
Hopson was pronounced dead just before 9:20 a.m. Thursday. A paramedic said his death was the result of cuts sustained during the struggle.
Bail in Todd's case has not yet been finalized. He will be arraigned on Monday morning.
